Inligting kan ook by Francois Lötter by 021 873 2786 of [email protected] gekry word.

Boeresport for kids

On the first day of Spring, a local organisation, HEART, held a successful Boeresport event for the children of HEART PapKombuise, of both Hillside and Smartie Town in Paarl East.

The children were very excited, as it was the first time a Boeresport Day was hosted in either of these communities, and parents and grandparents were wonderful spectators.

Hillside and Smartie Town are both labelled “Red Zone” areas. This means there is active gangsterism there. The Boeresport Day is one of many of HEART’s initiatives to provide safe, fun, sober and uplifting activities in these areas.

According to Mandie Erasmus of Heart, no problems occurred and none were actually expected.

In all, 120 children participated in the Boeresport Day.

“Our children do not have opportunities to take part in sporting events, owing to lack of money for travel, kit, uniform and such,” she explained.

“Combined with lessons fostering respect, manners and care for each other and the community, we will continue to host varied opportunities to broaden our children’s worlds and experiences.”

The 120 children were divided into four age groups, each split into green (Hillside PapKombuis) and purple (Smartie Town PapKombuis), two volunteers were assigned to each age group colour, and took part in sack races, three-legged races, potato racing, egg throwing and tug of war.

The Hillside HEART PapKombuis won the games points, but Smartie Town’s HEART PapKombuis definitely won the Best Behaved points on the day!

Great fun was had by all, and HEART continues to serve the child and adult beneficiaries of both PapKombuise on a daily basis with the daily breakfast service, extra meals, provision of hair and nail care, provision of clothing, shoes, school bags and stationary, adult nappies, wheelchairs and much more.

Anyone who wishes to donate to the organisation can contact Erasmus on 062 5375 206.

Register your child soon for 2019
Parents are once again being asked by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to register their children early for the 2019 school year.

Registration for the 2019 learner phase lasts from Thursday 1 February until 23 March.

Parents will receive a written response from the school by 22 June on admission. By 23 July parents should inform schools about acceptance.

WCED spokesperson Paddy Atwell said schools should have filled available places at their schools by the third quarter of the year.

“Parents are requested to complete the necessary application at schools as soon as possible to avoid disappointment,” he said.

“Because there is no guarantee that an applicant will necessarily be accepted at their school of first choice, parents are encouraged to apply to various schools.”

Schools must inform parents in writing and provide reasons for the application being unsuccessful. Schools must also indicate whether the learner is placed on a waiting list.

“If your child is on a waiting list, it doesn’t guarantee that the child will be admitted to that school,” said Atwell.

If necessary, parents can call the local district office on 021 860 1200. Application forms are available at the schools

Man shot in attempted robbery

A 35-year-old man from Dal Josaphat survived a shooting incident during an armed robbery in Mbekweni last week.

According to Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, the incident occurred on Thursday 9 November at approximately 06:00 outside a spaza shop in Imali Street, Tembani Square.

It is alleged the victim, identified as Kennedy Custome, stopped at Benjamin’s Cash Store to deliver bread.

“Three unknown suspects armed with fi****ms approached him,” Vanqa said. “They demanded his bakkie keys so they could open the safe inside the bakkie to get the money.”

When the victim refused to give the suspects the keys. They shot him in the right leg, grabbed his keys and ran away.

The three suspects, a 22, 25 and 26-year-old, fled from the scene with the keys.

The public informed the police about the suspects’ whereabouts and they were arrested in the J-Block section of Mbekweni by police the same day.

Vanqa said: “Luckily nothing was taken from the safe as they struggled to open it when they did.”

The victim was rushed to Paarl Hospital. An armed robbery docket was registered. The suspects appeared on Monday 13 November in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court.

Ds. Desmond Meyer

Wat as . . .

Ek onderstreep graag twee gedagtes.

Ds. Desmond Meyer - VGK Koelenhof insluitend VGK Simondium.
