Brenda Nyirenda, Deputy Secretary General of the Patriotic Front (PF), announced that the party will proceed with its convention immediately after the burial of former President Edgar Lungu. Responding to claims by Charles Kakoma that the opposition would remain fragmented until 2026, Nyirenda dismissed these assertions, suggesting that the ruling UPND hopes for a divided opposition. She emphasized that unity within PF is imminent once a new leader is selected, asserting that there are no ongoing internal fights and reaffirming the party’s commitment to reunification.

Former PF Secretary General Davies Mwila has expressed skepticism about the UPND government’s claims of leadership success, praying for their continued stay in power due to concerns over their treatment of Zambians. He criticized President Hichilema’s administration for failing to fulfill promises, such as reducing fertilizer costs, and argued that Zambians are worse off than ever since independence. Mwila questioned UPND’s claim of delivering Zambia from corruption and oppression, warning that the country risks stagnation if promises remain unfulfilled.

Mining expert Edward Simukonda has challenged the Zambian government’s recent announcement to collaborate with large-scale investors to boost gold mining. He argues that the government, through ZCCM-IH, has the capacity and resources to fully manage the sector independently. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Mines plans to subdivide mining areas in Mufumbwe District for cooperatives to reduce nomadic mining, signaling a shift towards more localized, small-scale operations. Simukonda questions the necessity of investor partnerships, emphasizing Zambia’s existing capacity to develop its gold industry internally.

The Zambian government has urgently filed a lawsuit to halt today’s planned burial of late former President Edgar Lungu in South Africa.

The state insists his final resting place remains disputed and demands a pause until legal resolution.

Zambia’s Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, is leading the charge, naming Lungu’s family and the funeral company in the suit. The government argues that, under Zambian law and tradition, Lungu deserves a state burial at home—with full military honours—as a matter of national protocol, not private preference.

The High Court in Pretoria will hear the case this morning in a dramatic race against time.

Family Refuses to Repatriate Lungu’s Body, Citing Wishes for Hichilema to Stay Away

The family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu delayed the repatriation of his body from South Africa for a second time, citing a dispute with President Hakainde Hichilema over funeral arrangements. The family’s lawyer stated they do not want Hichilema to attend Lungu’s funeral, as Lungu wished he not be near his body. Lungu, who died at 68 in South Africa on June 5, was to have a state funeral presided over by Hichilema, but disagreements over the funeral plan caused the delay. Despite the political rivalry—Hichilema defeated Lungu in 2016 and 2021 elections—the government remains hopeful the issue will be resolved, emphasizing national unity. Lungu's family hopes his remains will eventually be repatriated and buried in Zambia.

Raphael Nakacinda Affirms Former President Edgar Lungu Did Not Endorse Successor

Raphael Nakacinda, Secretary General of the Patriotic Front (PF), clarified that late former President Edgar Lungu did not appoint or endorse anyone to succeed him as party presidential candidate before his passing. Nakacinda emphasized Lungu’s belief that leadership is a divine right, not something to be handpicked, and should emerge based on service and responsibility. During a televised interview on Diamond TV, he dismissed claims that PF president Kelvin Fube Bwalya was endorsed by Lungu, warning against manipulation or undue influence in the party’s leadership succession.
