The Zambian government has urgently filed a lawsuit to halt today’s planned burial of late former President Edgar Lungu in South Africa.

The state insists his final resting place remains disputed and demands a pause until legal resolution.

Zambia’s Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, is leading the charge, naming Lungu’s family and the funeral company in the suit. The government argues that, under Zambian law and tradition, Lungu deserves a state burial at home—with full military honours—as a matter of national protocol, not private preference.

Family Refuses to Repatriate Lungu’s Body, Citing Wishes for Hichilema to Stay Away
