Why We Must Talk to Our Kids About Social Media and AI

This week, I had the privilege of speaking with over 700 students at Hoërskool Stella and Vryburg High School. It was an incredible experience to discuss the vital importance of critical thinking in the age of social media and artificial intelligence.

In a world filled with information, misinformation, and AI-generated content, teaching our children to think critically is more important than ever. It's not about shielding them from technology, but rather equipping them with the skills to navigate it safely and wisely. We need to have open, honest conversations at home about social media safety, online privacy, and how to spot fake news or manipulated content.

Our kids need to understand that what they see online isn't always real, and that the content they create and share has real-world consequences. Let’s keep the conversation going!

Today was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do at Impactful Media Mentors. I had the privilege of speaking to 700 high school learners at Hoërskool Vryburg High School about online safety and digital footprints. It was early and cold but their energy and curiosity were contagious!

Our youth truly was made for a time like this—they are not just users of technology, but pioneers who can shape a safer and more impactful digital world for everyone.

I was pretty surprised that when I checked my settings, I could see a photo of my face sitting on my exact location. That is a hard no for me, so I followed these steps and disabled the feature. It is now set to never.

I sat with each of my teens today and made sure that they had the feature turned off as well. Location sharing has its purposes, but it should be purposeful and never set to automatically go on.

Most major apps and games used by children have parental control tools. It is always best to use these tools whenever available. The 2 parental control tools that are a must are Google Family Link and Apple's Screen Time (better with Apple Family Sharing) as they allow you to manage content age restrictions across apps, games, and media, and offer additional features like setting screen time limits, seeing device location, and managing app store or in-app purchases.
