đ The Unimaginable Attack: The Elephantâs Return đđŽđł
This chilling and deeply unsettling event, which highlights the tragic escalation of human-wildlife conflict, sent shockwaves through the community and media outlets globally.
A Vicious Retribution:-
The tragic incident began in June 2022 in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India. The victim, a 70-year-old woman identified as Maya Murmu, was attacked by a wild elephant that had strayed from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary while she was collecting water near her home.
The First Attack: Maya Murmu was rushed to the hospital but tragically died from her injuries shortly after the initial trampling.
The Second Attack: Later that evening, as her heartbroken family and villagers gathered to perform her last rites, the same rogue tusker returned.
The Funeral Disruption: The elephant charged the cremation site, scattering the terrified mourners. It then grabbed Maya Murmu's body from the pyre, trampled it furiously once more, and threw the remains aside before finally retreating into the forest.
The villagers were forced to wait for hours until the elephant herd had left the area before they could recover the body and complete the funeral rituals. This unprecedented act has been widely discussed by conservationists, who note that elephants have extraordinary cognitive abilities and memory, leading some to speculate about a possible, yet unconfirmed, motive or perceived provocation connected to the deceased.
