PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER HOSTS TAKE-A-GIRL-CHILD-TO-WORK CAMPAIGN
Bloemfontein – 11 August 2026: Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, hosted approximately 20 female learners from Moemedi High School in Bloemfontein as part of the Take-a-Girl-Child-to-Work Campaign, held under the theme: “Empowering Young Girls through Exposure, Mentorship and Career Inspiration.”
The campaign provided the learners with an opportunity to spend the day with the Provincial Commissioner and a team of accomplished female SAPS professionals who exposed them to the wide range of career opportunities available within the organisation.
The program commenced with an opening and introduction by Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, followed by an opening prayer led by Lieutenant Colonel (Rev) Mochekoane. The newly elected Junior Provincial Commissioner, Orefilwe Matlala, welcomed the learners and shared her journey in the Junior Commissioner Programme. She encouraged the girls not to allow social media, peer pressure, or societal expectations to define who they are, reminding them that their potential is far greater than what others may tell them.
The career inspiration and empowerment session featured women from various SAPS disciplines who shared their personal journeys and experiences. CAC Mpho Sekulisa spoke about her journey as a rugby player and becoming the first woman to serve as Deputy Chairperson of the Free State Rugby Union.
Sergeant Boitumelo Mothibi from Parkroad SAPS shared her journey as the first woman to be nationally selected as a motorcycle rider, while Sergeant Bassie Nthoba from Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit educated the learners on the handling of r**e cases.
The learners were further introduced to specialised policing careers by Constable Monica Delport from the Diving Unit, Sergeant Thandeka Sentsho from the Dog Unit, Sergeant Refiloe Ntabele from Bloemfontein Public Order Policing (POP), and Sergeant Mpho Moroka from Bloemfontein Tactical Response Team (TRT), who shared her journey as the first woman to complete the TRT course during her training.
Lieutenant Colonel Nomdumiso Nxumalo from Provincial Legal Services spoke about her career as a legal practitioner within SAPS, while Colonel Andiswa Myeki from Parkroad SAPS encouraged the learners to believe in themselves and reminded them that they can become anything they aspire to be.
Brigadier Nombuso Mgudlwa, Provincial Head of Internal Audit, also shared insights into her duties as an auditor and encouraged the young girls to consider diverse career paths within SAPS.
Addressing the learners, Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia said the initiative was aimed at reaching out to and motivating young girls to believe that they can achieve anything they set their minds to, irrespective of their backgrounds.
Lieutenant General Lesia thanked the learners for participating in the programme and encouraged them to make use of the opportunities presented to them and remain focused on their education and future aspirations.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks and the presentation of gifts by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services, Major General Len Singh.
