Report drunk, reckless taxi drivers – QWAUTA
By Teboho Moloi
QWAQWA — The chairperson of the QwaQwa United Taxi Association (QWAUTA), Matshediso Nteo, has urged commuters to immediately report taxi drivers who drive recklessly or under the influence of alcohol during the festive season.
Speaking to The Guard, Nteo said the association expects a surge in commuter numbers as people travel for the holidays and is determined to ensure an accident-free festive period in the QwaQwa region.
She warned that reckless driving, ill-discipline, drunk driving and the operation of unroadworthy taxis will not be tolerated, stressing that such behaviour puts passengers’ lives at risk.
“We are not negotiating on drunk driving by our drivers, nor will we tolerate any behaviour that falls outside the law. Our drivers know the rules clearly. I urge passengers to report offenders immediately, and I assure you that decisive action will be taken. They will lose their jobs and the law will take its course,” said Nteo.
The festive season, like Easter, is traditionally marked by increased road traffic and a spike in fatal accidents, largely due to high vehicle volumes and irresponsible driving.
QWAUTA has, however, assured commuters that all taxis undertaking long-distance trips during the festive season are roadworthy and fully compliant, with valid operating licences and permits.
The association further reiterated its support for law-enforcement operations, including the impoundment of taxis operating illegally using so-called “chatter” permits.
Nteo added that QWAUTA has reached agreements with taxi associations in other provinces to ensure smoother operations and prevent delays in getting passengers to their destinations.
She said measures have also been put in place to prevent driver fatigue, with strict limits on the number of trips drivers may undertake in a day.
“Drivers will not be allowed to overload themselves with trips in pursuit of profit. Adequate rest is non-negotiable,” she said.
To accommodate late arrivals, Nteo said local taxis will be on standby to transport passengers to their homes.
“The final drop-off point for long-distance taxis will be the MTN Rank, where local taxis will be available to assist passengers,” she said.
