The N3 southbound before the Peter Brown Drive exit remains closed as recovery takes place after a fuel tanker caught alight earlier on Thursday.

Motorists travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Hilton using Old Howick Road are advised of congestion, and large trucks using the road as an alternative to the N3 following a fuel tanker crash.

The fire that engulfed a fuel tanker on the N3 near Pietermaritzburg on Thursday has been extinguished, but the southbound carriageway remains closed as crews begin the difficult task of clearing the wreckage and dangerous goods from the road.

The fire departments were called to the scene, with firefighters using large quantities of foam to bring the blaze under control.
