Our Heritage
Fatty Essa's Ice Blocks proudly traces its roots back to 1940s Pietermaritzburg, where the late Mr. Abdool Sacoor Essa, affectionately known as Fatty Essa, founded Essa's Fruiterers at 534 Church Street. This iconic shop was renowned for its handmade ice blocks, crafted with love and care by Mr. Essa himself.
A Legacy Born
Using traditional metal ice trays, Mr. Essa would freeze his secret recipe, wrap the blocks in newspaper, and sell them to eager customers. The distinctive red color of the ice blocks became synonymous with Fatty Essa's, as did the sight of Mr. Essa's reddened hands.
For generations, residents of Church Street and beyond have cherished memories of Fatty Essa's Ice Blocks. Young and old alike would gather at Essa's Fruiterers to savor the unique taste and flavor that has become an integral part of Pietermaritzburg's history.
Today, we proudly continue Fatty Essa's legacy, recreating the same beloved recipe that has captivated taste buds for decades. Our commitment to authenticity ensures that every bite transports you back to the 1940s, to the vibrant streets of Church Street, and the warmth of Mr. Essa's hospitality.
Indulge in Fatty Essa's Ice Blocks and relive the nostalgia of a bygone era. Our promise: the same taste, the same redness, the same flavor that has made us a Pietermaritzburg institution.
