Suspended UIF chief Teboho Maruping earns R1.4m, DA demands answers
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised concerns over the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Commissioner, Teboho Maruping, receiving over R1.4 million in salary while on precautionary suspension for more than a year.
Maruping was suspended in September 2024 following his alleged involvement in a controversial R5 billion agreement with Thuja Holdings, which was declared invalid by the Pretoria High Court in May 2024. The Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed the subsequent appeal with costs .
In response to a parliamentary question by DA MP Michael Bagraim, the Ministry of Employment and Labour confirmed that Maruping has earned R1,413,878.95 during his suspension.
The Ministry stated that Maruping remains employed as the UIF Commissioner and is still subject to the disciplinary process. The official is expected to submit heads of argument on October 12, 2025, with the hearing scheduled for October 20, 2025 .
The DA has written to Minister Nomakhosazana M**h, demanding answers on why the disciplinary process has been delayed for over a year and seeking clarity on the department's timeline for handling such cases. Bagraim emphasized the need for accountability, stating, "We want to know who is responsible for allowing such costly delays to continue unchecked."
This development has sparked public debate over the use of taxpayer funds and the efficiency of disciplinary procedures within government departments.
