BREAKING NEWS: MAN ARRESTED FOR SELLING A JACKAL PUPPY CLAIMING IT TO BE A GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG
A joint operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Wildlife Crime Information Network (WCIN), focusing on cross-border investigations and anti-poaching, has resulted in one arrest and one fine in two separate cases of alleged illegal wildlife possession and trade.

The team uncovered the illegal sale of wildlife on social media. Acting on this intelligence, officers arrested a 30-year-old man in Reitz and rescued a leopard tortoise.

Police received a tip-off that a leopard tortoise was being advertised for sale on Facebook Marketplace. The suspect was traced to his workplace in Reitz and then escorted to his home, where the tortoise was found and rescued before it could be sold.

He was arrested for allegedly possessing a protected wild animal without a permit and conducting a restricted activity without authorization, which violates Section 57(1) of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Act 10 of 2004).

In a separate incident, intelligence shared by the same integrated team led to the rescue of a jackal pup in Clarens. The pup was allegedly being kept inside a house and advertised for sale online.

A 19-year-old male found with the pup was fined R3,000 under Section 40(1)(c) of the Free State Nature Conservation Ordinance 8 of 1969.

These cases show the growing problem of illegal online wildlife trading and highlight the value of close cooperation and information-sharing between police, conservation officials, and wildlife crime organizations.

The public is reminded to know the laws around wildlife. It is illegal to collect, keep, transport, or trade wild animals without the proper permits from the provincial nature conservation authorities.

UPDATE: SHEBESHXT CASE POSTPONED TO MAY NEXT YEAR FOR TRIAL

The Polokwane Regional Court has postponed the case of Lekompo musician Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, known as Shebeshxt, to 17 May 2027 for trial. Magistrate Felleng Ntilane postponed the matter during the pre-trial conference today.

During the pre-trial, the state brought 22 charges against Shebe. Amongst the charges are 4 counts of attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, culpable homicide and reckless driving.

During the hearing, Shebe’s lawyers also indicated that they will bring an application for the recusal of Magistrate Ntilane. The defence believes that the magistrate is biased towards the accused.

The state aslo indicated that they will bring 22 witnessess during ttrial. Amongst the witnesses are the alleged victims and a ballistic expert.

The Magistrate has read 22 charges brought against Lekompo musician Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke known as Shebeshxt during a pre trial conference at the Polokwane Magistrate court.

Amongst the charges includes 4-attempted murder, assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm and robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The state is also charging Shebe with culpable homicide involving the death of his daughter Onthatile Chuene.

Shebeshxt lawyer says they intend to bring an application to have the magistrate to recuse herself from the case. Sheba’s lawyer claims that the magistrate is being biased.

BREAKING NEWS: ZIMBABWEAN CHILDREN BROUGHT BACK TO SA TO WRITE MATRIC
Grade 12 Zimbabwean school pupils who were forced to leave South Africa in the wake of the June 30 deadline for immigrants to leave the country are being brought back this week to prepare for and write their final matric examinations.

The process is being facilitated by the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Coordinating Committee (ZEPCC) Academy, which has appealed to affected pupils to return to SA ahead of the October National Senior Certificate examinations.

With the exams only weeks away, displaced pupils have a limited window in which to return, settle into accommodation and resume preparations.

The situation has also raised concerns about pupils who may have been prevented from registering for the exams, deregistered or unable to complete other examination requirements as a result of their displacement.

This comes two months after The Citizen reported that thousands of Zimbabwean pupils faced an education crisis as families affected by deportations and anti-immigration tensions were forced to leave SA.

At the time, the committee warned that Grade 12 pupils were particularly vulnerable because many had spent their entire school careers following SA's Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (Caps).

The committee has since issued an urgent appeal to Grade 12 pupils outside SA and those who remained in the country but failed to register, deregistered, missed the June rewrite exams or are facing intimidation and bullying at schools to contact it.

"They should contact ZEPCC Academy to be taken to a boarding facility to prepare and write their 2026 exams. We hereby inform you that the children will be going to SA before end of this week.

"They will be staying at a boarding facility in Johannesburg," the committee said in a notice to parents of affected pupils.

There is no clarity how many pupils will be accommodated at the facility, who will cover the cost of the intervention, including meals and other basic necessities, how many are expected to travel from Zimbabwe and how many are already in SA.

At least 35 000 children reportedly returned to Zimbabwe with their parents between May and September.
