SASSA expands WhatsApp self-service with grant status and verification checks
SASSA’s WhatsApp self-service platform allows beneficiaries to check grant statuses and verification requirements.
Social grant beneficiaries can now use the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) WhatsApp self-service platform to check their grant application status, determine whether they are due for a review and find out if they need to complete a Proof of Life verification. The service is available through SASSA’s WhatsApp number, 082 601 0111, and is designed to allow beneficiaries to access grant-related information without having to visit a SASSA office.
According to the service, beneficiaries can begin by sending “Hi” to the WhatsApp number and selecting “Social Grants” from the main menu.
The SASSA Self-Service chatbot states: “Hi there! Welcome to the SASSA Self-Service Chatbot. I can assist you with FAQs like your next payment date, updating your bank details, and addressing any recent issues you've encountered.” Once the Social Grants option has been selected, beneficiaries can choose the relevant grant type, including the Old Age Grant, Child Support Grant or Disability Grant, before completing an identity verification process.
The process requires beneficiaries to confirm their mobile number, enter a one-time password (OTP) and provide their ID number. Once the Social Grants option has been selected, beneficiaries can choose the relevant grant type, including the Old Age Grant, Child Support Grant or Disability Grant, before completing an identity verification process.
