A Ray of Hope for the Mathebula Family: MEC Susana Violet Mathye's Intervention*

In the midst of tragedy and hardship, a glimmer of hope has emerged for the Mathebula family in Bela Bela. The family, consisting of 8 children, aged between 24 and younger, has been living in a shack in an informal settlement after their father's violent demise and their mother's subsequent struggle with depression.

The family's story is one of sorrow and resilience. After the father's affair with someone else ended in tragedy, the mother was taken to a hospice in Mokopane four years ago, leaving the children to fend for themselves. Despite their struggles, the children have held on to hope for a better life.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, led by MEC Susana Violet Mathye, has stepped in to offer support. The mayor of Bela Bela, Cllr Gloria Seleka, has undertaken to provide the family with an RDP house as soon as the area is fully developed by COGHSTA. Additionally, the department collected donations for the family, including non-perishable food, clothes, sanitary pads, and mattresses. The Department of Correctional Services donated vegetables from their facilities in the area and seedlings for the family to grow their own vegetables.

The department's intervention is part of its ongoing activities to honor Nelson Mandela's legacy. On July 23, 2025, the department commemorated Mandela Day in Bela Bela town with a 67-minute service initiative. The celebration brought together key stakeholders from local municipalities, SAPS, Correctional Services, and other transport sector stakeholders. Activities included donating groceries and sleeping mattresses to the Mathebula family, planting vegetables, and renovating their residence.
