AHMEDABAD, INDIA: A tragic airplane accident in western India has resulted in at least 204 fatalities after an Air India flight bound for London, carrying 242 people, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad.
Officials have confirmed that the aircraft struck a residential building housing medical staff. Gujarat police chief Rajiv Malhotra informed the BBC that 204 bodies have been recovered, though it remains uncertain how many were passengers and how many were individuals on the ground.
Indian police have reported that one passenger survived the incident, identified by local media as British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh. Ramesh shared his boarding pass with reporters and recounted the terrifying experience: “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise... it all happened so quickly.”
Air India stated that the flight included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese passengers, and one Canadian. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work through the debris, which includes damaged residential buildings.
One woman told NDTV how her son narrowly escaped by jumping from a second-floor window just before their building was engulfed in flames.
