Saturday: An interview with Lucia Poggenpoel
1pm on Agape FM.
Lucia Poggenpoel, born in Witbank, is a singer, songwriter, and session musician whose love for music is undeniably a part of who she is. Her musical journey began in primary school when she joined the school choir and took piano lessons. She recalls: “It was only in high school, when I sang a solo for my piano teacher, that the singing bug really bit.”
After school, she earned a BMus degree from North-West University (NWU). Since then, she has expanded her love and talent for the arts by obtaining a professional drama diploma. In 2017, she brought all these creative streams together by completing a Grade 8 musical theatre exam.
Lucia’s journey with ATKV-Crescendo
In 2023, her music career took a decisive turn when she was selected to participate in the ATKV- Crescendo mentorship programme in Paarl. For Lucia, this experience was more than just a skills development opportunity; it became a safe space for self-discovery and healing.
The song she wrote during those few days, My Crescendo, was chosen last year as the theme song to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ATKV-Crescendo’s talent development legacy. The song is deeply personal and filled with a longing for her brother, who passed away two years earlier. “Even though he is no longer with us on earth, it felt as if he was still growing with me – like a crescendo – and walking this journey alongside me.”
Lucia feels inextricably part of the Crescendo family. “They saw the value in me as a person and as an artist, and offered met not only a stage, but a home."
As jy val (If You Fall) is the second single Lucia produced in collaboration with Crescendo Music.
Lucia Poggenpoel Believes in Second Chances with As jy val
Pretoria singer-songwriter Lucia is back on the airwaves with her brand-new single, “Ek
hou van jou” — a fresh, feel-good pop track with a heartfelt message about unspoken
affection.
This radio-friendly single follows Lucia’s debut album As jy val, launched earlier this year
at the Daisy Jones Theatre outside Stellenbosch. All four songs from the album were
written by Lucia herself and produced by Crescendo Musiek. “Ek hou van jou” is the
second single now hitting national radio, and it brings a lighter, more melodic sound than
the introspective title track.
“I wrote this song for someone who has no idea how I feel,” Lucia admits. “At that time, I
was listening to a lot of Coldplay and wanted to create that same emotional yet uplifting
sound in Afrikaans.”
The result is a warm, catchy melody that captures that “first-crush” feeling — light, honest,
and beautifully singable. Listeners will relate instantly to the song’s message:
‘In die stilte sal ek van jou hou… tot jou glimlag my onthou.’
Lucia describes “Ek hou van jou” as “a song you can send to someone special, keep
close to your heart, or even dance to — it just lifts your mood.”
The single was produced by Jean-Marc Meyer, who also added backing vocals and
helped craft the track’s bright, radio-ready sound.
