Tigers calling
Zulu Sierra 2 November Echo Mike!

Daniel Pienaar social media supporters will recognise the callsign of 18-year-old matric learner, Nicole Mitchell.

A while ago, Daniel Pienaar posted a photo of Nicole Michell who had passed her Radio Amateur Exams (Ham radio, A class) with distinction.

Passing these exams allowed Nicole to obtain a licence to operate amateur radio equipment which enables her to communicate with others across the globe.

Ham radio is not only a rewarding hobby, but also a vital tool for emergency communication during natural disasters or other emergencies when conventional communication systems may be down.

Now the school has heard that Nicole scored the highest marks in the Eastern Cape. In doing so, she walks away with the Noel Hammond Award.

It is certainly no easy feat to write such challenging exams and to perform so well whilst still contending with a challenging matric curriculum.

The Tigers are overjoyed and so proud of you, Nicole!

Ride those radio waves, girl!

Zulu Sierra 2 November Echo Mike!

Daniel Pienaar is incredibly proud of Nicole Mitchell, a Grade 12 learner, who recently passed her Radio Amateur (Ham radio) exams with Distinction.

The exams and subsequent learning process enhance technical skills and understanding of radio technology, electronics and communication principles.

Passing these exams has allowed Nicole to obtain a licence to operate amateur radio equipment which enables her to communicate with others across the globe.

Ham radio is not only a rewarding hobby, but also a vital tool for emergency communication during natural disasters or other emergencies when conventional communication systems may be down.

The radio interest runs in the family. Nicole's dad, Mr Carlin Mitchell, is also a radio amateur.

The South African Radio League is a member of the International Amateur Radio Union. Each member has his/her own callsign. So now, when Nicole hears ZS2NEM, she has to respond.

It's certainly not any girl of 18 who has her own callsign. The Tigers are very proud of you, Nicole!

The SARL Website

As many of you are aware, the sarl.org.za was the victim of a cyber-attack, that resulted in lots of spam e-mails. This was first indication that our system had been breached. In response to this we shut down the web site and the certain mail services while the breach was investigated.

During the investigation it came to light that there were also other attempts to attack the system that included the possible exfiltration of members name, e-mail and SARL password Hash.

Considering this, it was advised not to resurrect the old sarl.org.za server, but rather re-direct to the new web site, that has by far better security because it is deployed on an up to date and security patched system with the necessary security enhancements. This was done in the best interests of all members.

To enable us to interact we switched sites without warning, we apologise for this, but it was necessary.

We are in the process of migrating pertinent content from the old to the new, and this will take some time. Please bear with us during this period.

To access the new site, you can either go to sarl.org.za or mysarl.org.za, you will see lots of information on the page to try and showcase what we as amateurs do.

The Ham Portal requires you to register and fill in your details and verify your e-mail address, and at which point the SARL will update your status from pending to member, etc. Please give a little time for this process as it requires us to check and allocate the correct status to your profile.

Once your status has been updated, please log in and update your profile by adding your call sign and club at the bottom of the profile page.

When updating your status, you will be added to the FORUM, where you can log in with the e-mail address you registered with in the Ham Portal. Click the forgot password option, where you can fill in your e-mail address again and request a password to the forum.

Moving forward we will be adding features to the site, this will take some time. We will be prioritizing the work, so please be patient.

ALLSTAR LINK

As of yesterday, an Allstar Node was installed at the Lady Slipper Repeater site. The node number is 62997 with the callsign ZS2PE.

The node is interfaced with the site's conference network, and the node is currently connected to the Western Cape. There is plenty of activity, so pick up the mic and say hi to our fellow hams down the coast line.

Happy Easter! 🐰To our amazing members and fellow hams — may your Easter be filled with peace, joy and great connections....
