A selection of Japanese Fire-bellied Newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) photos taken while walking around some rice fields close to our accommodation on the outskirts of a fairly large town in central Honshu. These stunning newts are incredibly common around the rice fields, but we also saw them more sporadically in natural wetlands like the still margins of streams. We were there close to peak breeding season, and saw several pairs hanging out together in the water along with some individuals making overland movements. The first photo is a mature male in situ, sporting a stunning blue tail that develops during the breeding season. The second photo is a pair in situ in a rice field, with the male on the left and female on the right. Finally, a closer look at the female who was visibly chunky with eggs.
