LOOK | Actress Opens Up About GBV Portrayal on ‘The Wife’

Social media has been awash with purple profile pictures as Women For Change calls for gender-based violence (GBV) to be declared a national disaster.

Actress Mbali Mavimbela, known for her role as Hlomu on Showmax's The Wife, has lent her voice to the movement.

On the series, she portrayed Hlomu, a woman trapped in an abusive relationship with her husband Mqhele, played by Bonko Khoza (S1) and by Wiseman Mncube (S2).

"I remember playing this role and almost losing my mind," she shared, reflecting on her portrayal of a GBV victim.

Mavimbela expressed her confusion and concern, saying, "I couldn't believe that the emotions I went through are someone's reality."
She recalled asking her directors, "why do I have to cry so much and when will she (Hlomu) be strong and stand her ground ?!!!"

The actress opened up about the emotional toll the role took on her, saying, "and when I come home my sister would be worried at how I would go straight to sleep without doing the things I loved."

Mavimbela also shared her encounters with victims of GBV, stating, "Going out in public wouldn't help either because I encountered a lot of victims young and old that would cry and share their story."

She expressed her feelings of helplessness, saying, "My DMz would be flooding with essays, and I felt so helpless."

In a message of support, Mavimbela said, "I stand with you and let's stand together.”

The nationwide shutdown planned for November 21 is expected to draw significant attention to the issue.
