Mahwelereng- We were greeted by a white vibrant tent where the fundraising event was in full swing. Parents and students alike were In high spirits and the vintage attire made it impossible to distinguish teachers from pupils.

Each grade from 8 to 12 showcased their talent keeping everyone buzzing with excitement. The stalls were filled with treats like ice cream, popcorn soft drinks and sausages

MEMORANDUM TO MOGALAKWENA MUNICIPALITY

Mokopane - On September 4, 2025, the Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU) and South African Workers Union (SAWU) led a peaceful March in Mokopane town, accompanied by South African Police Service (SAPS), the march led, COSATU General Secretary Solly Phetoe , aimed to express frustration and anger workers regarding prevailing situation in Mogalakwena local Municipality.

The issues at Hand

The workers are demanding action in several key issues, including

* Victimization and dismissal of shop steward and workers.

*Intended dismissal of 261 workers

*Outsourcing of services

*Poor Service delivery

*Grading of workers by

* Union bashing

Unfair Labour Practice.

COSATU alleges that the Municipality has engaged in an unfair labour practice, including.

*Unilateral change to terms and conditions of employment

*Disciplinary hearing being used as a punitive measures rather than a corrective one.

*Threats of dismissal to intimidate the employee.

*Failure to implement collective agreement.

Specific demand

Workers are demanding the following :

1. End of victimization and dismissal of shop steward and workers.

2.Withdrawal of intended 261 workers

3. Equal pay for work of equal value

4. Reinstatement of workers benefits unilaterally withdraw by the Municipality

5. Cessation of use of lawyers for internal disciplinary cases .

6. Proper service delivery to Communities

7. Consequences management for lack of spending on infrastructure projects.

8.Implematation of all Awards handed down by bargaining council and CCMA

9. Accountability for those involved in the VBS shenanigans.

10. A stop to sale of state land

Call to Action

The memorandum was handed over to the Mayor of Mogalakwena local Municipality Tulane Ngoako Taueatsoala , accompanied newly elected Regional Executive Committee (REC) member, Mr Mathebula. The workers are demanding a response to their memorandum within 14 days of receipt.

Mokopane - 17 years old Hendrick Kgatla from Phahlaphahla Secondary School in Strekwater ( Ga-Chokoe) has made Limpopo proud by securing second position among under 18 athletes
Kgatla's achievement was highlighted by an sport activist Isaak Sebetha, who praised the young athletes talent.

The Confederation of School Sport Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) game 2025, held at Somhlolo National Stadium brought together hundreds of young athletes from across the region including, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Eswatini . The tournament featured a range of sporting disciplines including athletics (U13 ,U15 and U18 categories)
soccer( under -18 for both boys and girls, and basketball.

Kgatla's impressive performance has put Limpopo on the map , showcasing the region's athletics talent and potential.

Mokopane - Nancy Mamiki Zwane along with her three accused Lesiba Edwin Mashiangako, Molapo Martin Marakalala and Jabulani Matokong Masingi appeared in Mokopane Regional court yesterday . They are standing trial for the murder of 54 years old Phineas Zwane.

The trial was postponed by the magistrate Mr Pretorius due to the absence of the prosecutor's , dispite the investigation being concluded. The case has been rescheduled for trial on September 25, 2025.

Notably. Jabulani has been granted bail . While the three other accused will remain in custody till the trial date.

Books, Writers & Publisher Dialogue.

Limpopo Arts and Culture Council hosted a dialogue for books, writers and publishers at the Old Mogalakwena Chambers on August 21,2025. The event brought together writers publisher and librarian to discuss development of writing and publishing as a business. Kenny Mathivha a key presenter, highlighted that Waterberg Region has five delects while Se-Venda has four delects .He noted that the council has previously discussed issues facing book distribution and writers , but the focus of this event was on growing the industry.

State of Writing and Publishing.

Mathivha emphasized that soccer league generate billions from sponsorship while writers and publishers struggle due to working in silos . He stressed that collaboration is key to success , citing his own experience running a campus magazine at Turfloop University ."Writers are the engine of the society changing minds of scared people."he elaborated.
However , he expressed disappointment that most libraries are empty , citing the Waterberg head of libraries declined their invetation.

Promoting Local Content.

Mpho Mahlakanya, panelist , noted that book reviewer often focus on offshore writers , neglecting local talent . Mr Hlaudi Motseoneng former head of SABC set a precedent by giving SA artist hundred percent air play. The discussion highlighted the need to structure the book value chain reduce reliance on foreign publisher and promote local content .
This will enable African book publishing to emerge as a vital sector for the economy development and job creation , and cultural empowerment.

Challenge and Opportunities.

The dialogue identified several challenges including limited access to books in the rural communities , a lack of law addressing the book publishing industry and inadequate investment in bookstore and distribution network.With approximately 13,000 bookstore in the continent, South Africa lead with 1,949 libraries but each library serves approximately around 40,000 people . Small publishing companies face hurdles in contracting , procurement , while big companies have an advantage .

The Way Forward

The discussion emphasized the importance of installing a culture of reading encouraging children to read books , providing creative writing workshop for teachers . With the rise of social media , parents must monitor their children's on activities . The event concluded with an election of interim council for the Waterberg Region with Joe Mashoga as a chairman , Mogadi Letsholo as Deputy and Mr Rakabole as secretary.

Mogalakwena Today... Building Commuties.

Mahwereng - Yesterday, Donald Makhubela and Thulani Manamela, appeared in Mokerong Regional Court , while Lucas Thobakgale remain at large. They face charges of robbery and assault related to case of Phuthi Tsekane, a Grade 10 student .

The two accused came for bail application , but the proceedings were effected by technical issues . The court was postponed to August 28, 2025 due to the recording machine not working.
Phuthi's aunt ,Grace Tsekane expressed concern about his deteriorating health including facial swelling eyesight issues , and difficulty eating due to head injuries . The family is struggling to cope especially since Phuthi's mother is single parent of four with no income, apart from Phuthi's SASSA grant.
The family is now appealing for assistance to ensure that Phuthi receives the care he needs.
The accused will remain in custody until the next hearing.

Mokopane -Jabulani Matokong Masinga's court appearances are often dramatic , but this one was particularly extreme . Today Masingi and his three co-accused Lesiba Edwin Mashiangako, Mamiki Nancy Zwane and Molapo Martin Morakalala appeared in Mokopane Regional Court to confirm their next trial date related to the murder of 54 year old Phineas Zwane..

Before the magistrate arrived, Masingi asked the court officials to wipe his seat , citing his expensive Etienne Aigner suit and comparing himself to journalist who wear cheap jeans.
This behaviour set tone for the rest of the proceedings.

When the magistrate read out the application of Mogalakwena Today to record the proceedings , Masingi and his co-accused objected . However, both the prosecutor and presiding magistrate noted that the state has no objection , citing the community right to know . Masingi continued to disrupt the proceedings , rising his hands showing disrespect dispite multiple warning.
He eventually resorted to insulting Mogalakwena Today team .

After the court proceedings , Mogalakwena Today team , went to Mokopane Police Station to open a case against Jabulani for intimidation, threats and cremia injuria . Interestingly, this isn't Jabulani 's first brush with the law, the similar incident occurred in March 2017 in Mookgopong, where he allegedly made death threats, forcing Mogalakwena Today to close their office .

Jabulani later obtained R5,0000 bail from Polokwane High Court on August 7, 2025, and his case was postponed to September 4, 2025. While Jabulani out of bail , his three co-accused will remain in custody till then

Moshate - On Saturday August 2, 2025, the Tombstone Unveiling Ceremony of the late Vaaltyn Kekana took place. Vaaltyn Kekana was tragically shot at point blank range on July 23, 2019, after whistleblowing tender fraud within Mogalakwena Municipality

The ceremony drew a diverse attendance including representative from various organisations such as the ANC, SACP, COSATU SANCO , and ZCC church as well as other religious groups.the royal house of Chief Kekana and the Moshate community along with surrounding villages. Mr Motale Dewet Monakedi the African National Congress Veterans League (ANCVL) Regional convener for Peter Mokaba and former Member of Parliament (MP) was also among the attendees

The ceremony featured a key notespeaker speech by the Moyor of Mogalakwena Municipality, Ngoako Taueatsoala . Notably, the Moyor addressed the community's concerns by clarifying the he was not yet in office when the killings occurred . He extended his condolences to the Kekana family and assured them that the law that the law could take its course , bringing perpetrators to justice.
