"We are going to be laying down a blueprint," he said. The blueprint included the right to strike, a liveable wage, and challenging multinational corporations.

The apartheid government called it sedition. History calls it liberation.

She was more than a wife.

Urbania Mothopeng. Lioness of Azania. Musician. Conductor. Teacher. Social worker. Activist.

She was married to Zephania Mothopeng — PAC president, imprisoned on Robben Island, later on the mainland, banned, restricted, the man who kept the PAC alive when the world looked away. But Urbania was not just the wife. She was the conductor. The teacher. The social worker who kept communities together while the men were in prison or exile.

1986. Paris. World Conference on Sanctions. She's there, representing the PAC, wearing her glasses and her traditional earring, looking at the camera like she's looking at the apartheid regime itself — unflinching, unafraid, unimpressed.

Her husband was still in prison. Her movement was still banned. Her country was still burning. But she was in Paris, arguing for sanctions, arguing for recognition, arguing for the PAC's place in a world that had already chosen the ANC.

She died in obscurity. No state funeral. No documentary. No mural. Just this photograph. And the title: Lioness of Azania.

"Black spots":
• Term used by apartheid regime for land owned by Black people in areas designated for white ownership
• Not informal settlements — legitimate property ownership by Black South Africans
• Policy: forced removal, demolition of homes, resettlement to designated "homelands" or townships
• Part of broader apartheid spatial engineering — Group Areas Act, Bantustan system

Was Moroka a coward or a pragmatist?

Dr James Sebe Moroka led the ANC through the Defiance Campaign. Then the trial came. He hired his own lawyer. Pleaded mitigation. Separated himself from his co-accused.

The Youth League called it betrayal. The militants called it weakness. He lost the presidency to Luthuli by a large majority.

But here's the question: Was Moroka trying to save the organisation by sacrificing himself? Or did he just save himself?

Luthuli refused to resign. Lost his chieftaincy. Won the presidency. Became a Nobel laureate. Died under banishment.

Different choices. Different endings.
