UPDATE. Three weeks of campaigning officially closed yesterday in Rwanda. Today, Rwandans in Diaspora go to polls to vote for President and Members of Parliament. Polling stations were opened at 7 am and will close at 3 pm.

Over nine million Rwandans registered to vote in these elections with two million of them being first-time voters.

There are about 2,600 polling stations including 160 stations set up abroad. On Tuesday, representatives of special groups (women, youth and persons with disabilities) will be elected by electoral colleges.

RWANDA DECIDES. Rwanda's National Electoral Commission received a total of nine presidential candidacy applications, only three candidates were cleared by the electoral body including the incumbent President, Paul Kagame of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi)

The other two candidates are, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR) and Philippe Mpayimana, the sole independent candidate.

Campaigning opened on Saturday ahead of the Presidential elections. None of the trio is new to the contest as the two opponents have run and lost against Kagame before.

Rwandans are set to go to polls on July 15th to elect the President and members of the Chamber of Deputies.
