*Take the yoke that binds unto life*
With Dr Jason Musyoka -ETReM
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Math 11:29).
In this text, Jesus uses a mix of vocabularies, drawn from agricultural, teaching and pastoral sectors. Therefore Jesus owns a yoke, He is a teacher and a shepherd. Unlike fallen men, none of these roles of the God-man are intended at self service.
His yoke is a yoke of life. The great teacher and shepherd does not employ military strategies, or wring his sheep’s necks demanding obedience, for these are acts of death. The Lord of life places His yoke gently on our wayward souls. He is a teacher whose instruction aims to guide the soul from spiritual bo***ge to a shepherd’s eternal stalls of felicity. What then is Christ’s yoke?
His yoke is His teachings. ‘learn from me’ He says. This invitation demands that we recognise that the teachings invented by men and demons (Cf math 15:9; 1 Tim 4:1), no matter how well intended they may seem, are yokes of death. They are cruel to the soul, because in reality they seek to guide the unsuspecting soul to hell.
The pathways advanced by the yokes of death are tethered on human wisdom and appeal to the human mind and senses. They are in opposition to the gospel of Christ, whether directly or indirectly. They present flowery and amusing gospel to already chained souls. Their voices and offers imitate the great good shepherd.
Thus they have a version of salvation in life death and the after life, which broadly follows the teachings of Christ, but when examined closely, they fall short of the eternal wisdom of God.
To the willful slaves of the gospel, false teachers are empty and hollow. Their warehouse is full of counterfeit goods.
While the yokes men and demons lead men to the gallows, the yoke of Christ leads the soul to eternal rest,-a place where all tears are wiped, death is banished, sorrow and crying are exterminated, forever (Rev 21:4).
Men are to choose which yoke they want for themselves. Those awakened to life, understand that in God’s wisdom, taking the yoke of Christ is where true freedom is found.
