The GNU is South Africa's 'second miracle' — says Ramaphosa as the formation marks over 100 days in office:

The current Government of National Unity (GNU) has marked over 100 days in office.

•The GNU was formed with 10 political parties after the May elections. This after the ANC lost its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years, forcing it to enter a coalition/governance agreement with the other parties.
•President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the GNU as a "second miracle that we have put together" and "the best thing that we now have to move the country forward."

Though the GNU has earned praise and garnered optimism, it also has very vocal detractors. Over 100 days later, do you think the GNU will last or is it doomed to fail?

We are facing a pending national crisis — warns Basic Education Minister:

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has warned that budget cuts imposed by the National Treasury are putting teachers' jobs and learning in jeopardy.

•Gwarube says she plans to approach the Finance Minister over the issue and has also called for the realignment of government spending priorities.
•Gwarube said instead of continuously bailing out state-owned enterprises (SOEs), billions could have been directed to critical sectors such as education.
•All provincial education departments are facing budget shortfalls, resulting in the Western Cape announcing that thousands of teaching jobs would be cut in 2025, while Gauteng said it would be cutting the budget for feeding schemes and scholar transport in order to save thousands of teaching posts.

"These budget pressures are not just numbers on a spreadsheet—they translate into fewer teachers, reduced textbooks, and fewer admin support staff, which means teachers spend more time on admin work, thereby reducing learning and teaching time."

"The Deputy Minister and I have been in constant engagement with provinces to support them during this challenging fiscal environment. We have committed ourselves to doing everything we can to stabilize the system and have appealed to provinces to retain the basket of posts, in order to not compromise education outcomes," said Gwarube at a media briefing on Wednesday.

By the end of today, Brink will no longer be the Mayor of Tshwane — says ANC:

The ANC in Tshwane has confirmed it has received the go-ahead from its national leadership in Luthuli House to remove DA Mayor Cilliers Brink in a motion of no confidence today (Thursday), reports TimesLive.

•The motion of no confidence was brought by the ANC, who accused Brink of failing to ensure proper service delivery in the city.
•ActionSA — which was part of the DA-led City of Tshwane coalition government — recently announced that it had ended its partnership with the DA and would support the ANC in removing Brink.

"Today we are dealing with the first phase and the first phase dictates to us that we need not do anything but the removal of the mayor and that is what we are going to do," said ANC Tshwane regional secretary George Matjila.

R2 billion was looted from VBS Bank and only R107 million has been recovered — says AG:

Auditor-General (AG) Tsakani Maluleke said her office identified that municipalities who had invested with VBS Mutual Bank had lost about R1.6 billion and that only R107 million had been recovered.

•According to reports, several local municipalities in Limpopo, North West and Gauteng had invested public money into the bank, despite a notice from the National Treasury not to do so.
•Besides the municipalities, ordinary people, pensioners, stokvels and burial societies lost their money through the mismanagement, looting and collapse of VBS.
•In 2018, VBS was declared insolvent and bankrupt.
•In total, more than R2 billion was looted from the now-defunct bank.

"The money that was recovered is still quite little. At the last count, municipalities where we had raised this Material Irregularity, municipalities that had lost R1.6 billion, they had recovered R107 million, merely 7% of what they would have lost, which is a real tragedy because this is money that should have gone into fixing and building infrastructure so that citizens could enjoy service delivery," Maluleke was quoted as saying by EWN.

Editorial - South Africans Could Soon Face a 36% Electricity Tariff Hike... How Are We Supposed To Cope? ⚡️💡📈

Eskom has once again approached the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) with a request for steep electricity price increases over the next three years. The utility is asking for a 36% hike in 2024, followed by 12% and 9% increases in the two subsequent years.

This comes at a time when electricity costs have already surged by a staggering 450% since load shedding began in 2008. 💸💸

What’s even more alarming is that in 1994, South Africa had some of the cheapest electricity in the world. Fast forward to today, and citizens are not only dealing with skyrocketing tariffs but are also paying for years of corruption, huge-scale electricity theft, and general mismanagement at Eskom.

The financial burden continues to fall on ordinary South Africans, while the state-owned utility remains mired in ongoing crises.

How are South Africans supposed to cope with these relentless price hikes? Are you cutting back on electricity usage, investing in alternative energy, or finding other ways to get by?

We want to hear from you! Share your thoughts and experiences with us as we continue the conversation about how these price hikes - driven by years of mismanagement - are affecting us all and what we can do to ensure a sustainable, affordable energy future for South Africa.

26/09/2024

FNB Connect generated R18.6 billion in total revenue last year, including airtime and data sales for its 958,000 active SIM cards, as well as Lotto and electricity sales revenue over the last financial year.

This was revealed in the annexures to FirstRand’s investor presentation last week, where the company detailed how its various operating divisions performed for the year to the end of June 2024.

FirstRand is Africa’s most valuable banking group and owns companies such as FNB, RMB, and Wesbank.

From a consumer’s perspective, MVNOs work like regular mobile network operators (MNOs) but don’t have any of their own connectivity infrastructure.

They offer their customers cellular services through roaming agreements with mobile network operators such as MTN or Vodacom. An MVNO is often part of another business — like a grocery retailer, bank, or clothing store.

It also revealed a sharp increase in data use on the company’s network, with 12 million gigabytes used through the financial year—an increase of 31% compared to the previous year.

Total sales, including lotto tickets, electricity, airtime and data, totalled R18.6 billion, contributing meaningfully to FNB’s performance.

However, the launch of MTN’s MVNO offering in 2020 has enabled new players with attractive packages to launch on the country’s second-biggest network.

This has resulted in an MVNO explosion in recent years, with several companies launching their offerings on MTN’s network — including TFG Connect and Pick n Pay Mobile.

Standard Bank also recently announced that its rebranded MVNO, Standard Bank Connect, would ditch Cell C in favour of MTN as its wholesale partner.

Most significantly, Capitec launched its MVNO unit in 2022 on Cell C’s platform, which now boasts over 1 million active SIMs in South Africa.

Crucially, Capitec Connect is profitable for the bank and contributed R35 million in net income for the six months to the end of February 2024.

This represents a substantial R42 million year-on-year increase, with Capitec Connect recording a R7 million loss the year before during its first five months of operation.

FNB Connect CEO Sashin Sookroo told MyBroadband earlier this year that they welcome the growing competition in the MVNO market as it increases the popularity of the offering in comparison to traditional network operators.

“I think the advent of more MVNOs and more competition has actually got customers thinking about what they are missing out on,” Sookroo said.

“There has actually more uptake on our side [than before other MVNOs launched].”

Sookroo noted that FNB Connect’s fundamental difference from most MVNOs is that many of its clients also bank with FNB, enabling the bank to cross-sell its products.

Importantly for the bank, it also keeps its ‘front-of-wallet’ for clients. In a world where many individuals have multiple bank accounts, the competition is increasingly about which bank account is used more often and is the primary account.

As a result, many banks have turned to offering clients more products and services to keep their offerings front of mind.

MVNO offerings from FNB, Capitec, and Standard Bank are part of this growing competition, with banks aiming to leverage their existing client base to cross-sell different products.

“One part you can look at is the customer acquisition, but the real litmus test is the retention rate and whether customers are seeing your value proposition,” Sookroo said.

“We value people who transact, we value people who use. We don’t just want a high number of customers. We actually focus a large portion of our strategy on quality.”

Sookroo said that this focus has yielded positive results. “You really see customers taking up and staying with the product.”
