Contrary to what many believe, reading does not begin at school. It begins at home.

On this Read Aloud Day, give just 15 minutes to the little ones in your life. Read aloud to them. In the lounge. On the floor. On the bed. Under the tree. In the car, taxi or bus. Wherever you are, open a book and begin.

It starts with a parent, a guardian, or an older sibling saying, “Come, let us read.”

Let children hear the rhythm of language. Let them interrupt with questions. Let them laugh at the funny parts. Let them watch you pause and think. In those ordinary moments, you are building far more than literacy. You are shaping attention, confidence, curiosity and connection.

You do not need a perfect accent. You do not need to perform. You need a book and a willing heart.

South Africa will not become a reading nation by chance. It will happen on purpose, one household at a time.

Tonight, pick up a book. Gather the children. Read.
