RIKY RICK’S COTTON FEST COMES TO AN END…
THE END OF AN ERA SET TO LAUNCH NEW BEGINNINGS

Johannesburg, South Africa (Tuesday, 9th December 2025) - It is with heavy hearts that the organisers of CottonFest today announced that the festival has come to an end.

Following the initial announcement of the 2026 festival on social media earlier this year, differences among the current shareholders have led to disputes between them. After careful internal review and consideration, it has become clear that the shareholders no longer share the same long-term vision. This divergence has placed strain on operations and made it increasingly challenging to continue the festival in a manner that upholds the standards and vision set out by its sole founder, Riky Rick.

“CottonFest has always been rooted in creativity, community and cultural celebration focused on creating a platform for the youth to shine,” stated CottonFest owner and organiser Bianca Naidoo. “While we remain extremely proud of what the festival has achieved and are deeply grateful for the support it has received from our fans, partners and the artists over the years, the differences in festival’s vision and purpose among the two parties has made it clear to our family and the team, that concluding this chapter is the most realistic path forward.”

The team emphasizes that this decision was made after careful consideration, and in the best interest of all parties involved, including staff, collaborators and the broader community that has supported the festival since its inception over 7 years ago.

Festival founder Riky Rick’s partner, Bianca Naidoo, together with the Makhado family have expressed appreciation for everyone who have contributed to CottonFest’s growth and its impact on the arts and entertainment landscape and the drive to keep Riky’s legacy alive.

Although the festival will not continue under its existing structure, the Creative Programme, launched in 2025, will continue to build on the initiatives it has already achieved, in creating different opportunities for young talent throughout the year. The team remains optimistic about future plans with a deeper support for creative expression in new and meaningful ways for the youth to be celebrated.

Current ticket holders can request their full refunds from Webtickets (under their self help process) from today.

5 FOLD WORSHIP RELEASES MUCH ANTICIPATED DEBUT SINGLE ‘GLORIOUS GOD’

PRETORIA 5 DECEMBER 2025: They bring a sound comprising a balance between Traditional and Contemporary Gospel. Beloved church worship collective 5 FOLD WORSHIP is proud to announce the release of their highly anticipated new single Glorious God.

Glorious God captures the authentic passion, unity, and spiritual depth that have made 5 FOLD WORSHIP one of the most cherished worship ministries in the region. It speaks of their reverence for God as above all.

“All our songs are about glorifying God but also point the listener back to the author & finisher of our faith - Jesus Christ,” says Worship leader Bello Mpendulo.

From Mamelodi, Pretoria, the team has 15 musicians, 10 singers, and five instrumentalists. They hope their vision to spread the Gospel through music that stands out.

“It has always been our Pastor’s vision to one day record the worship team professionally,” Mpendulo says.

“When our current Vocal Director and Musical Director joined the church two years ago, we started working towards making that dream a reality. And here we are today.”

Their core mandate is to preach the Gospel through music.
“By God’s grace, we have not yet faced many challenges in these early stages of our music journey. Being an in-house worship team has made it that much easier to work together, even on a professional level.”

This festive season, they plan to push this new single as best as they can, and ensure to engage with their newly found audience.
The release of this is a build-up to the 11-track heartfelt collection of songs created to uplift, inspire, and draw listeners closer to God, set for release in 2026.

The study decisions giving South Africa’s youth a real advantage
5 December 2025: Qualifications open doors, and most professions now require one to even be considered for an interview. Those without one face considerable opposition in the job market: some 34% of people with only matric, and 38% with less than matric are without work, according to the 2025 Q3 Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). That number falls sharply to 20.8% for youth with vocational or technical training, and 10.4% for university graduates.
“Employers use qualifications as a first measure of readiness, and institutions have had to match their programmes to that expectation.” Leon Smalberger, CEO of the Academic Institute of Excellence (AIE), says qualifications that show practical ability, industry relevance, and job-ready competence now stand out, because these are the qualities companies look for when choosing who moves forward in the hiring process.
“Companies want proof of applied ability, how someone handles unfamiliar tasks, and how quickly they settle into a team, with most in-demand roles prioritising recognised qualifications. As such, practical programmes that provide exposure to real-world working conditions are growing more attractive to matriculants and young adults struggling to find their footing in the job market.”
Stats SA’s Q1 QLFS provides further clarity on what fields carry the most weight in the modern economy, revealing that the trade industry – spanning retail, wholesale, and hospitality – is the largest employer of youth, absorbing nearly a quarter of those who have work, followed by community and social services at 19.8%, finance at 18.4%, and manufacturing at 10.5%.
“Trade is the least qualification-dependent of the four. Many entry-level retail and hospitality roles don’t require formal study. But management positions, food safety, hospitality management, and specialised technical retail jobs such as IT, automotive, and telecoms do. As for most higher-income roles across sectors, qualifications remain essential.”
As the new year approaches, Smalberger shares five steps matriculants and job-seekers should take when planning their study and career paths.
1. Understand where the demand is
South Africa’s labour market absorbs new entrants unevenly, and some sectors are growing faster than the talent available. Smalberger says students should start by understanding where the real demand is, because qualifications perform differently once they meet actual vacancies. Engineering, digital fields, technical trades, and specialist business roles continue to absorb talent well, giving young people in these areas a clearer path into work.
2. Assess the structure behind the qualification
Qualifications differ not only by title but by how they are structured. Smalberger says students often overlook this when comparing institutions. Programmes that include applied tasks, industry tools, or project-based work give graduates an advantage with employers who want proof of ability beyond theory. The structure of a qualification often determines how well it holds up once a graduate is under real workplace pressure.
3. Checking the accreditation pathway
Accreditation shapes how a qualification is recognised in the industry. “Employers trust accredited pathways because they offer consistency, verification, and a clear quality benchmark. A qualification with national credibility performs well in recruitment, and when it also carries international recognition, graduates gain mobility in fields shaped by global standards, such as technology, engineering, digital design, and specialist business services.
4. Evaluating the practical component
Practical exposure is one of the strongest predictors of early career success. Simulated environments, industry-grade equipment, applied projects, and structured workplace tasks offered by career-focussed, hands-on institutions like AIE with advanced equipment and curricula help students get used to real conditions before their first interview. These components matter because they close the gap between learning and output.
5. Planning for the long arc of learning
While qualifications remain the foundation for employability in many sectors, long-term adaptability is starting to play a bigger and bigger role in career growth prospects. Job-seekers entering 2026 should choose study paths that support ongoing development, not fixed knowledge. Fast-moving fields reward graduates who keep pace, and institutions that promote continuous learning prepare them for careers that will change many times over.
“Institutions that see qualifications as part of a broader national capability, rather than a stand-alone certificate, give graduates far stronger prospects. Reputable higher education institutions align programmes with the needs of high-demand fields: artisan training prepares electricians, diesel mechanics, and automotive technicians for real challenges in simulated workshops; IT and data programmes expose students to the tools used in modern digital roles; and architecture and engineering courses build competence through project work that mirrors industry practice.
Institutions that recognised this shift in the market early have adapted, providing the skills training and qualifications that are most relevant to employers, with clear proof of how graduates would add value to their businesses,” concludes Smalberger.

Global Spotlight Turns to Local Talent with Lady of the House SA Winners Compilation

Johannesburg, Friday, 5 December 2025 – The journey towards one of South Africa’s most anticipated electronic releases began with an open call. Lady of the House invited women and non-binary producers across the country to share the sounds that move them. The response was overwhelming. What followed was a month’s long discovery of ambition, craft and identity that has now culminated in the Lady of the House South African Winners Compilation, officially available now for pre add and pre save ahead of its release on 12 December 2025.

This compilation marks the first South African chapter of a global movement that continues to widen the pathways for underrepresented voices in electronic music. What makes this project distinct is its devotion to storytelling through sound. Instead of a single winning track, three artists were selected. Each brings their own world to the project, creating a body of work that reflects South Africa’s layered and evolving dance music identity.

The three winners Queen Leshka, Lu-Zer and Sharm Pillay were chosen after months of adjudication by an esteemed panel of Godmothers and mentors, including Gigi Lamayne, Shamiso, Namakau Star and dance music legend, Tamara Dey. Their guidance and belief in championing authentic African voices shaped the spirit of the contest, which was hosted in partnership with Jägermeister’s Save The Night initiative and supported by global partners such as the Pete Tong DJ Academy, Beatport, TribeXR, Gray Area and Drumsheds.

Each of the three artists arrives with a narrative that expands the possibilities of South African electronic music. Queen Leshka contributes “Soul Train”, a warm and melodic production driven by percussion and guided by her instinctive approach to storytelling through rhythm. Her reputation in Amapiano circles continues to grow, yet this release offers a deeper look into her versatility and intention as a producer.

Lu-Zer offers “Ndawo Yami”, a deeply personal and emotional debut honouring their late mother. The track blends trip hop, alternative sound design, Afro jazz textures and electronic finesse, introducing an artist whose work is both cinematic and vulnerable. With a debut EP underway, Ndawo Yami is a poignant introduction to a voice that feels new yet rooted in lived experience.

Sharm Pillay’s “Soul To Soul” completes the trio with a powerful and emotive techno production shaped by her global performance background. Her intuitive style and command of the dance floor are felt throughout the track, echoing the ethos of her SEKSiCuLLTURE brand which centres elevation, movement and self-expression.

The compilation took five to six months to assemble, from the initial submissions to the finishing touches on the final masters. It reflects the purpose driven work of the Lady of the House team, label partners and mentors who recognised the responsibility of presenting South African talent with care and intention. The selection process was both meaningful and challenging, with an impressive volume of submissions that spoke to the depth of creativity rising in the country.

Beyond the music, this release represents visibility, courage and the growing momentum of a movement committed to shifting narratives. Lady of the House continues to create platforms for women and non-binary artists whose contributions often go unheard in a male dominated industry. This compilation stands as both an acknowledgment of excellence and an invitation for more creators to step forward.

As Lady of the House looks ahead to a new year of global expansion and collaboration, the South African Winners Compilation serves as a powerful foundation. It captures a moment in time when the country’s electronic scene grows bolder and more expressive, guided by artists who carve their own lanes with conviction. As the wider journey evolves, Lady of the House remains open to new demos, new partnerships and new stories waiting to be told.

Make sure to pre-add or pre-save the Lady of the House South African Winners Compilation today and keep posted to Lady of the House online for more news ahead of the 12 December 2025 EP release.

Kwaito Giants Trompies Celebrate Love and Nostalgia in New Single “Lilizela” Enlisting Nokwazi, Kwesta & Stoan

Trompies Set the Stage for “Pantsula 4 Life” EP with the Release of “Lilizela”

Johannesburg, Friday, 5 December 2025 – For more than three decades Trompies have stood as one of South Africa’s most influential musical forces. Their roots run deep in the townships that shaped them. Their sound sparked a movement that defined an era. Their voices became part of the social fabric of a country in transition. From their debut in 1994, the group carved a unique sonic identity layered with African textures, deep bass lines, percussive loops and lyrics delivered proudly in vernacular. They captured the stories of everyday people and transformed Kwaito from a genre into a cultural statement. Even after releasing more than twelve albums, earning multiple platinum certifications and reaching over a million sales, Trompies continue to be driven by the same heartbeat that birthed them.

Their new single “Lilizela” arrives as a reminder of the group’s timeless place in South African music and the power they still hold to unite listeners across generations. Featuring powerhouses, Nokwazi, Kwesta and Stoan, the song carries the unmistakable Trompies formula that has endured through the years. Built on infectious repetition and a warm sing along hook, “Lilizela” brings together an authentic kwaito core with subtle elements of modern piano influences. It is a song designed to stir memory and movement. Its very essence is rooted in celebration and the energy of wedding season where kwaito has always reigned as a soundtrack of joy and community.

The creation of “Lilizela” revived the spirit of collaboration that has long defined Trompies. Finding the perfect groove between the producers and featured artists was central to capturing the emotion they envisioned. The result is a record that honours their origins while expanding their sound into a space that resonates with both loyal fans and a new wave of listeners. Trompies have always understood the value of evolution without abandoning identity. “Lilizela” stands firmly in that lineage. It blends their signature kwaito feel with new age Afro pop influences introduced by its featured voices and in doing so reaffirms that the genre and its pioneers continue to influence South African music with authority.

The release of “Lilizela” also marks the official pre add to their forthcoming EP “Pantsula 4 Life” set for release on 30 January 2026. The EP brings together an impressive roster of collaborators including Vetkuk vs Mahoota, Kwesta, Kabza De Small, TOSS, Reece Madlisa, Dr Lamandro, Nokwazi and more. It is a body of work that celebrates homegrown sound while carrying forward the legacy of a group that has shaped the identity of Kwaito for more than thirty years.

“Lilizela” is a declaration that Trompies remain an essential thread in South Africa’s musical story. It is a reminder that the dance floors they once ignited still belong to them. It is a celebration of a genre that continues to inspire. As the world looks toward the release of “Pantsula 4 Life”, Trompies step into this new chapter with the same pride, purpose and passion that have always defined them.

2025 BETWAY SUMMER CUP

Johannesburg, South Africa — After a week of nerve-wracking weather, the skies cleared and a bumper 2025 Betway Summer Cup day was played out in front of a festive Jozi crowd.

The day’s feature went the way of KZN raiders trainer Frank Robinson, jockey Tristan Godden and 4yo Mauritzfontein home-bred Mocha Blend (Ideal World – Mocha Special).

As soon as the starter released the field from the gates, Godden moved his charge to the inside rail, settling her 3rd from last and letting her bowl along at the back of the field.

As soon as the field turned for home and came off the false rail, she grew wings, moving stealthily up the inside rail to be 4 lengths off the leaders with 600m to go.

At the 300m mark, she was sitting in the slipstream behind The Equator with The Ultimate King boxing her in. Godden switched her out to go round The Ultimate King and she hit the front, but then had to find more to fend off a spirited charge from Olivia’s Way. However, her courage prevailed and she crossed the line with half a length in hand, stopping the clock at 127.32.

“It doesn’t feel real, it still doesn’t feel real,” said a delighted Godden, who was celebrating his first Grade 1 victory. “I know a lot of people didn’t like her, but I did. People asked me what I was backing in the Summer Cup and I said I’m backing myself. You’ve got to come into races like this thinking you’ve got a chance. Realistically I thought she would run in the first four, but at the back of the Quartet.”

His sentiments were echoed by Robinson, also celebrating his first Gr1 victory. “I was quietly confident she would run into a place because I rate her. I knew 2000m is what she wanted and I think the conditions were ideal for her.”

Mocha Blend was bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein and races in Jessica Jell’s famous yellow and black Mauritzfontein silks. Mary Slack was on course to lead in the winner for her daughter.

The Ultimate King finished 2 lengths 3rd, Busstopinhounslow was 4th and second favourite The Equator (7-2) was fifth, beaten 4.90 lengths. Interestingly, five of the first eight past the post went off at 100-1.

Mocha Blend (Ideal World – Mocha Special) is a 4yo filly bred by Mauritzfontein and Wilgerbosdrift. She races in the interests of Mauritzfontein (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mrs J B Jell) and victory in the Betway Summer Cup takes her earnings to R3,734,462.

The Jackpot City Dingaans provided a spectacle as Trust battled it out with Jan Van Goyen down the straight, ultimately prevailing by 0.7 lengths for trainer Candice Dawson and jockey Serino Moodley. Golf legend Gary Player was on course to lead in the winner on behalf of Messrs L M Nestadt, Gary Player Stud Farm (Pty) Ltd & Ralphs Racing (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Miss K Ralphs).
