Help pollinators: how to create safe watering stations. During hot weather, bees, butterflies, and other insects need water, but they can easily drown in deep, smooth-sided containers. With a few simple tricks, you can provide them with a safe place to drink. 🐝

Four ways to set up a safe watering station:

1️⃣ Marbles or stones: Place glass marbles or small stones in a shallow dish and fill it halfway with water. Insects can land on them and drink without falling into the water.

2️⃣ Natural sponge: A damp sponge in a shallow dish with a little water is perfect for smaller bees, native bees, and hoverflies, which drink from the wet surface.

3️⃣ Angled, rough-textured branch: Place a rough branch diagonally inside a jar of water. It acts as an exit ramp for butterflies, small frogs, or any other creature that might fall in.

4️⃣ Damp sand: A dish of moist sand is a favorite for solitary bees, which prefer to hydrate from damp ground rather than open water.

What to avoid:
❌ Deep, smooth-sided containers with nothing for insects to land on—these act as traps where insects can drown.

Change the water frequently to keep it from stagnating, and place the container in the shade. A well-made watering station will be teeming with life in just a few days. 🍃

Borage is one of the oldest vegetables in Spanish cuisine, though outside of Aragon and Navarre, few people realize that almost the entire plant—with its star-shaped blue flowers—can be used.

The stalks are the most traditional part: when peeled and steamed, they become tender, offering a mild flavor reminiscent of cucumber and artichoke. They are typically served with potatoes and a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil—a classic dish from the Ebro Valley’s vegetable gardens.

The blue flowers can be eaten raw in salads, frozen into ice cubes for summer drinks, or candied to decorate desserts. They possess a delicate, slightly oceanic nuance.

Young, tender leaves work well raw in salads, or they can be coated in flour and fried—a traditional Aragonese treat often dusted with sugar.

In the garden, borage is a rewarding plant: it tolerates both sun and partial shade, germinates in just a few days, and reseeds itself annually, requiring no replanting.

It also acts as a magnet for wildlife; bees and hoverflies are drawn to its continuous blooms from May until the first frosts, making it an excellent companion plant for tomatoes, zucchini, and strawberries.

One final note: borage contains low concentrations of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, so it is best consumed in moderation—avoid eating large quantities or consuming it on a daily basis.
