ESWATINI SWIMMING PRESIDENT NUNES ELECTED TO AFRICA AQUATICS ZONE IV BUREAU
Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) President Pedro Nunes has secured a major regional appointment after being elected as a member of the Africa Aquatics Zone IV Bureau, placing the country at the heart of the governance of aquatics in Southern Africa.
The development was announced by the ESA Executive Secretariat through the office of Chief Executive Officer Nozipho Mahlalela, with the association describing Nunes’ election as a significant achievement for both the president and Eswatini aquatics.
Nunes, who has served as President of the Eswatini Swimming Association since winning the association’s leadership election in September 2024, will now take up responsibilities at Zone IV level, where he will work alongside regional leaders in shaping the administration and development of aquatics across the zone.
His election also represents a continuation of Eswatini’s representation within the regional body.
Nunes takes over the baton from former ESA President Herman Jele, who previously represented Eswatini on the Africa Aquatics Zone IV Bureau.
The ESA Executive Board and the wider aquatics family have expressed their appreciation to Jele for his years of service and contribution to the development of aquatics, both domestically and beyond Eswatini’s borders.
Jele’s tenure laid a foundation which Nunes will now be expected to build on as he assumes his new regional responsibility.
In his new role, Nunes will be involved in the administrative governance of the Zone IV body, strategic initiatives and efforts aimed at strengthening competitive excellence among nations within the region.
His election comes at a time when Eswatini continues to seek greater recognition and influence on the continental and regional sporting stage, making the appointment particularly significant for the country’s aquatics fraternity.
The ESA believes Nunes’ experience, commitment and vision will enable him to make a meaningful contribution to the Bureau while strengthening cooperation between Zone IV nations.
The association has hailed the election as recognition of Nunes’ commitment to the development of swimming and other aquatics disciplines across the region.
“His election to the Africa Aquatics Zone IV Bureau is a meaningful recognition of his dedication to the development of swimming and aquatics across the region,” the ESA said.
The association further expressed confidence that Nunes would bring progressive leadership to the Bureau over the next four years.
The ESA also extended its congratulations to Nunes, describing the appointment as a well-deserved achievement and wishing him success in his new regional role.
For Eswatini, the appointment provides an opportunity for the country to have a stronger voice in regional aquatics administration while contributing to initiatives aimed at developing the sport and creating a platform for greater competitive excellence.
Nunes will now carry Eswatini’s interests into a wider regional arena, following in the footsteps of Jele while taking on the challenge of helping shape the future direction of aquatics in Africa Aquatics Zone IV.
The four-year mandate is expected to give Nunes an opportunity to influence strategic discussions, strengthen regional partnerships and contribute towards the continued growth of swimming and other aquatic disciplines across Southern Africa.
Meanwhile, the Africa Aquatics Zone IV Bureau is the regional leadership structure responsible for guiding, governing and developing aquatics across Southern Africa, making Nunes’ election a significant regional leadership achievement for Eswatini.
