Police in Disguise Attempt Robbery: Detective Killed in Belfast Shootout, Three Accomplices Arrested

In a shocking incident on Friday night (22 August) in Belfast, Mpumalanga, a 54-year-old police detective was shot dead. The officer was attached to Pienaar Police Station. Preliminary investigations indicate that he, along with three accomplices, attempted to stop vehicles on the highway while disguised as police officers to commit robbery.

When SAPS Anti-Hijacking Task Team and K-9 Unit arrived at the scene, a shootout ensued, resulting in the detective being killed on the spot. His three accomplices, aged between 30 and 42, were arrested.

During the chase, a white Datsun Go lost control and crashed into a tree, where the detective’s body was recovered. Authorities recovered a 9mm pistol, a revolver, and several rounds of ammunition from the scene. A Toyota Hilux police van belonging to Pienaar Station was also found abandoned on a nearby farm, suspected to have been used without authorization.

The three arrested accomplices face charges of attempted robbery, armed robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of fi****ms and ammunition. They are expected to appear at Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 August.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the incident, stating, “No one can serve as both a police officer and a criminal. Committing crimes in police uniform is completely unacceptable.”

Following the incident, SAPS has initiated an internal investigation, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is conducting a separate inquiry.

Colesberg, Northern Cape – Authorities have recently conducted a major operation in the Colesberg area targeting illicit ci******es. During the operation, ci******es worth approximately R7.5 million were seized, and the involved business operators were issued a 7-day notice to provide original documentation for the goods.

According to police sources, the coordinated operation took place on Wednesday, 20 August 2025, across the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Free State. The main objective of the operation was to combat the illegal trade of counterfeit ci******es.

Multiple sites were searched during the operation. At a store on Kerk Street, approximately R370,000 worth of illicit ci******es were found. Nearby, a truck was also searched, uncovering counterfeit ci******es valued at R2.5 million. Additionally, a filling station on Station Road yielded counterfeit ci******es worth R590,000.
