Chapter 1
Lebo was merely nine years old when she lost her mother, the sole individual who had ever provided her with a sense of security. Following her mother's funeral, relatives pledged to provide care for her; however, those promises were quickly abandoned. She was subsequently shuffled between various homes until, at sixteen, she found herself alone on the streets with no sustenance, financial resources, or support system. Every day evolved into a relentless struggle for survival. Despite her efforts to secure employment, she encountered rejection due to her lack of education and experience. Hunger eventually became unbearable. One frigid evening, a woman named Rali approached her with a proposition. "You can earn sufficient funds to sustain yourself," Rali stated softly. "Although it is not the life anyone aspires to, it will ensure your survival." Lebo was aware that it was not the right decision, but she perceived no alternative. She entered a world she had never envisioned, harboring feelings of shame and pain that she concealed behind a forced smile. Deep within, she continued to envision a different existence. Rali, who oversaw numerous young women, frequently reminded Lebo that emotions only led to heartbreak. "Never trust anyone," she would say. "People solely desire what they can exploit." Years elapsed. One evening, Lebo encountered a quiet man named Micheal. Unlike everyone else, he did not judge her or treat her as an object. They conversed for hours, sharing laughter and stories. Prior to departing, he simply stated, "You deserve better than this." Lebo responded with a bitter laugh. "Individuals like myself do not experience happy endings." However, Micheal continued to visit her—not to purchase her time, but to genuinely know her. He presented her with books, as she had once confided in him that she cherished reading as a child. He encouraged her to believe that her past did not dictate her future.

Every day became a battle for survival. She searched for work, but without education or experience, every door was closed. Hunger became unbearable. One cold night, a woman named Rali approached her with an offer.
"You can make enough money to eat," Rali said softly. "It's not the life anyone dreams of, but it will keep you alive."
Lebo knew it was wrong, but she saw no other choice. She entered a world she had never imagined, carrying shame and pain that she hid behind a forced smile. Deep inside, she still dreamed of a different life.
Rali, who managed many of the young women, often reminded Lebo that feelings only led to heartbreak. "Never trust anyone," she would say. "People only want what they can take."
Years passed.
One evening, Lebo met a quiet man named Micheal. Unlike everyone else, he didn't judge her or treat her like an object. They spoke for hours, laughing and sharing stories. Before leaving, he simply said, "You deserve better than this."
