My name is Lwando (Jimmy) Mamfengu born and raised in the Eastern Cape at Chanti village which is not so far from Qunu living with a Disability. I am working for the company called BEE-Easy Gateway and I am an international Basketball player. The love and the slogan of our game saying “it’s not just a game its way of life” has brought an idea that I copied from one of my colleagues who attempted to cycle from Johannesburg to Durban to raise funds for Education. I so fell in love with idea and I raised a hand to say I also can do something like that through the world of Infinity Echo.
As a person who is living with a Disability I realised that our Basketball is not well known by many people out there also as you know that education sports and education go hand in hand and some of the people living with Disabilities do not have the brains for the books just like anyone out there be it abled or disabled. I thought of the most successful sporting codes in the world for example your Soccer, Rugby, Cricket just to name a few that is where the money is at. Bearing in mind these sporting codes people living with Disabilities are not in any of them.
Which where is I came to think of going out there to the public make them aware of this sport so that people have an idea of this sporting codes as you know that there is lot of sporting codes being played by people living with Disabilities but have no money to help them develop and be able to take them as careers.
This is the reason why I took the initiative to put a hand up to say I am willing to help those people who love the game like I do but cannot take it as career because it has no sponsorship to develop it and to also help those who wish to play the game but do not even have an idea about this sport for people living with Disabilities.
I would love it one day when a person living with a Disability to proudly say I am a Basketball player when someone asks “what do you do for a living?”. Knowing that he/she is making a living out of it and a lot of people know about this sport even those who feel like it’s the end of the road for them when they are involved in any kind of accident.
This could be a back up to someone out there as most companies take people living with Disabilities from age 18 – 34 for learnership and then after that what happens? Living with social grant is not enough as it is not easy to live with social grant in South Africa because when you live with a Disability there are some special needs that cannot be compromised for example a Wheelchair, Callipers, Crutches etc. just to mention a few. For a person living with a Disability these are the things he/she needs to on a daily basis, but what happens when that person cannot afford to buy any as we all know that the quality ones are paid for?

‘The Garden of Life’ programme expands at the Pathways Centre for the Disabled in remembrance of Mandela Day.

The Garden of Life started off at the Pathway Centre for the Disabled in February 2018 when a workshop was conducted at the Institute for Rural and Community Development offices - Veterans Acre. Pupils and teachers joined along and greatly appreciated the educational outing. The Garden of Life movie was played and ‘Tammy Tomato’ slides were shown. Click here to view videos: https://bit.ly/2LNC13R A Mighty Big Achievers course was conducted by Steven Barnard, to motivate and inspire the teachers and learners. Further, they learnt about the aquaponics and the tyre system.
Pathways Centre for the Disabled are the beneficiaries of the Reutech Corporate Social Investment activities. IRCD is the service provider that carries out ‘The Garden of Life’ workshops such as the one carried out at Pathways.

Mandela Day activities were held at Rietvlei in Pretoria East. Forgiven Ways and the IRCD’s Garden of Life - Farmer Kids Project were implemented with the diasabled children.

The project aimed to equip pupils at the Pathway Centre for the Disabled with gardening skills, so that they may form and carry out their own home gardens. In addition to their holistic education, the MBA further encouraged their self-esteem. Good self-esteem is imperative to all children including those living with physical and mental disabilities. Parents of the pupils also participated in the fun in order for them to set up the Garden of Life method of gardening at their homes. Children and adults enjoyed getting their hands dirty together, in a fun fruitful manner.

THE HOOPSTERS planned a TEAM BUILDING session for all staff members. They set up various activities including a warm up, basic hoop skills, hoop exercises and drumming. They engaged the team with confidence and encouraged co-workers to play, be active and bond. Well done to The Hoopsters on their first successful event!

The Hoopsters is a practical training platform as well as an enterprise development initiative founded on the unique Change Management methodology of Cheryl Donneson, I-Hoop. While embarking on a change journey facilitated by a Haggai Education and Training learnership programme, a group of young entrepreneurs not only recognised their personal growth and their ability to be flexible and adaptable but also how to simultaneously earn an income.
Endorsed by BEE-Easy and the Young Africa Development Group, the budding entrepreneurs have identified various avenues to earn income. Further, they have used the skills obtained from their learnership programme in a practical hands-on environment.
The Hoopsters currently have 3 focus areas within their business;
• Hoop Manufacturing
• Sales & Marketing
• Performances & Events
The BEE-Easy Team building session was the first event of its kind for The Hoopsters, they are honing their skills in preparation for the opportunities which are coming their way.
