Capital City LGBTI

Capital City LGBTI Capital City LGBTI is a gay news and marketing initiative for Pretoria, the Capital City of South Africa. To merge with the group "Gay - Boys Pretoria".

Pretoria is the 5th largest city in South Africa (in terms of population), and many times portrayed as the leading capital city on the African continent. Pretoria falls under the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (geographically the largest municipality in South Africa) with a population of almost 3 million people with a sizable LGBTI community. Though the ‘out’ Gay community in Gauteng is possibl

y the largest on the continent many still hide behind closet doors. There are still many negative stigmas, stereotyping and homophobia among people in South Africa despite a Constitution protecting everyone against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Cultural background, religion and misconceptions on colonialism (that being gay is a ‘western thing’) among the African community; homophobia, religion and conservative believes among the Afrikaner and other communities have made it difficult for many gay people to come out in South Africa. By using the voice and the right to freedom of speech; the media; good journalism; and expanding gay businesses, these ‘uneducated walls’ can be broken down. The Facebook group ‘Gay Boys – Pretoria’ (since 2009) has inspired this page, and will soon merge with this page to continue providing a voice for the gay community: Provide information on gay gathering places and other related business; give news on gay matters and help those coming out to find their way around the capital city. LGBTI – Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Tr*******al, Intersexual Community, or just simply anyone Gay.
