I wasn’t able to find the identity of these two men, but I did learn that the photograph comes from the personal collection of Herbert Mitchell, a longtime Columbia University librarian who amassed an extensive archive of 19th-century photographs and ephemera, which he kept in his apartment until his passing in 2008. Mitchell was described as a “confirmed bachelor,” and referred to his collection as his only “children,” reflecting the deep personal significance it held for him.
