My hobbies include reading, writing, cinema, choreographing drag shows, and creating costumes. I find joy in cooking, crafting cocktails, and exploring the outdoors with my border collies. Un été à La Goulette (1996) dir. Férid Boughedir

Set in the vibrant coastal town of La Goulette, Tunisia, during the summer of 1967, this coming-of-age tale follows three teenage girls—Gigi, Tina, and Myriam—each from different religious backgrounds (Catholic, Muslim, and Jewish). Their friendship is a beacon of hope amidst their families' cultural and societal divisions. The girls’ dream of losing their virginity to boys from outside their communities sparks both humor and tension, reflecting the challenges of coexistence and understanding.

Férid Boughedir captures the essence of a multicultural Tunisia with rich, warm cinematography that brings the seaside town to life. The film’s vibrant visuals and heartfelt performances celebrate the beauty and complexity of cultural diversity, while also exploring the universal struggles of adolescence, love, and identity.

Beneath its lighthearted exterior, Un été à La Goulette subtly critiques societal prejudices and the fragility of peaceful coexistence, particularly as it is disrupted by the Six-Day War’s political reverberations. The story juxtaposes personal awakenings with the broader socio-political landscape, offering a bittersweet meditation on innocence lost.

The film premiered at several international festivals, earning accolades for its tender yet critical exploration of community and identity. It stands as a testament to Boughedir’s ability to blend humor with poignant cultural commentary.

A Greek and an Irishman found themselves in a Starbucks one afternoon, casually chatting about the proud achievements of their respective cultures over steaming lattes.

The Greek leaned back with a smile and said, “You know, we built the Pantheon, not to mention the Temple of Apollo.”

The Irishman nodded, taking a sip of his coffee. “Impressive, no doubt, but it was us Irish who discovered the significance of the Summer and Winter Solstices.”

Not to be outdone, the Greek added, “And don’t forget, it was the Greeks who laid the foundations for advanced mathematics.”

“Fair enough,” the Irishman replied, “but the Irish were the ones who crafted the first timepieces.”

Sensing his moment to triumph, the Greek smiled knowingly. “Ah, but remember, it was the ancient Greeks who introduced the idea of s*x as a pleasurable activity!”

The Irishman paused, set his cup down, and grinned. “That’s true,” he said, “but it was the Irish who got women involved.”

Army of Lovers, a Swedish dance-pop group formed in 1987, rose to fame in the 1990s with hits like Crucified and Obsession, topping European charts and selling over seven million albums worldwide. Known for their outrageous style and campy music videos, the band became pop culture icons.

Founded by Alexander Bard, Jean-Pierre Barda, and Camilla Henemark, they debuted with Disco Extravaganza, later rebranded as Army of Lovers. Their breakthrough album Massive Luxury Overdose (1991) featured smash hits like Ride the Bullet and Crucified, a Eurochart favorite for 31 weeks. Despite moderate success in the UK and US, they dominated European club scenes.

The band underwent multiple lineup changes, with Michaela de la Cour and Dominika Peczynski joining during its peak years. Their albums The Gods of Earth and Heaven and Glory, Glamour and Gold solidified their European stardom, promoting messages like LGBTQ+ rights through their extravagant performances.

After disbanding in 1996, they reunited in 2001 with the best-of album Le Grand Docu-Soap. In 2013, they reappeared in Sweden’s Melodifestivalen with Rockin’ the Ride, though they didn’t make the Eurovision finals.

In 2023, Army of Lovers returned with the album Sexodus, proving their enduring legacy in pop culture’s boldest spotlight.
