The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that the United States is reconsidering its military presence in Kuwait and Bahrain following sustained Iranian missile and drone strikes that have left American facilities across both countries severely damaged.

Rebuilding Naval Support Activity Bahrain alone, the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet, would cost approximately 400 million dollars. The damaged structures are unlikely to be rebuilt at their current locations.

Hundreds of US military personnel have already been repatriated from bases in Bahrain and other countries in the region after Iranian strikes prompted urgent evacuation operations. Washington is now considering relocating some facilities further west, beyond Iranian missile range, with Israel among the locations under consideration.

Read that last detail carefully. America may relocate military infrastructure currently in Bahrain and Kuwait to Israel. The country whose war started this conflict may end up hosting the bases that Iran's retaliation made untenable in the Gulf.

The scale of what Iranian strikes achieved in Kuwait alone is staggering. Seven Kuwaiti soldiers killed. Four American servicemembers killed and 77 wounded. In Bahrain, Iranian strikes hit multiple buildings in Manama including the district of Juffair, where the US Fifth Fleet is permanently headquartered.

This is the reality behind the press conferences. America's most strategically important naval headquarters in the Middle East has been struck repeatedly. Its Gulf bases across seven countries have sustained 228 documented structural losses verified by EU Copernicus satellite data.

Its military personnel have been evacuated from facilities that the Pentagon spent decades building as the permanent architecture of American regional dominance.

And Washington is now asking whether those facilities can even be rebuilt where they currently stand.

The scandal, as the original post noted with precision, is not that America is reassessing its footprint. Protecting troops through repositioning is sensible military judgment.

The scandal is that the men and women who served in those bases were placed in that danger by leaders who treated war as a performance, dismissed every warning about Iranian retaliation as weakness, and promised swift victory against a country that spent 40 years preparing for exactly this conflict.
