🚨 TWO ARRESTED AS R100 MILLION MANDRAX LABORATORY UNCOVERED IN ERASMIA

Two foreign nationals, both in their late 30s, have been arrested in Erasmia, west of Pretoria, for allegedly manufacturing illicit drugs.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, during a joint operation involving members of the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), Crime Intelligence, K9 West Rand and the Special Task Force Pretoria.

The multidisciplinary team had received information about an alleged drug manufacturing laboratory operating on a smallholding in Erasmia.

Following up on the information, law enforcement officers searched the premises and allegedly uncovered a drug laboratory where Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R100 million were being manufactured.

Police also discovered what they described as a new drug laboratory, where the suspects were allegedly preparing to manufacture crystal methamphetamine.

The operation forms part of broader efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS), Hawks, Customs and other law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the manufacture and distribution of illicit drugs.

The two suspects are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 11 September 2026.

🚨 ESCAPED OFFENDER RECAPTURED AFTER ROOIGROND PRISON ESCAPE

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed the rearrest of convicted offender Edward Khomotso Madiba, who escaped from the Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre near Mahikeng on Sunday, 6 September 2026.

Madiba was recaptured within 72 hours of his escape, following information received by the South African Police Service (SAPS) regarding his movements.

He was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and parole violation.

Following his recapture, Madiba was transferred to Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria, where he is being held in a maximum-security cell.

The DCS says the successful recapture highlights the importance of cooperation and information-sharing between correctional services and law enforcement agencies.

Tshwane strengthens internal maintenance capacity with 23 new artisans

The City of Tshwane has welcomed 23 artisans through the Amabutho Expanded Public Works Programme as part of efforts to strengthen its internal workforce and reduce reliance on external service providers.

The City says the initiative forms part of its broader strategy to build a skilled workforce and improve the maintenance of municipal facilities.

The newly welcomed artisans have been trained through the Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy (TLMA) and include skilled plumbers, welders and electricians.

Their appointment comes shortly after 85 artisans graduated from the TLMA, with the graduates also expected to join the City’s workforce.

According to the City, Tshwane has more than 400 municipal facilities across its seven regions that require regular maintenance.

The 23 artisans will be deployed within the City’s regional operations to augment existing staff and improve its ability to respond to maintenance needs.

The City says the move could also help reduce expenditure on external service providers, noting that more than R20 million had previously been spent on service providers to assist with maintaining municipal facilities.

🚨 TMPD DRUG UNIT ARRESTS MAN IN SOSHANGUVE OVER MEDICATION

Members of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Drug Unit arrested an adult man in Soshanguve on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, following a follow-up operation linked to suspected contraventions of the Medicines Act.

According to TMPD, the operation began in Heatherly before officers proceeded to Soshanguve after receiving information concerning the alleged mishandling of medication in the area.

Officers searched the suspect after they had reasonable grounds to believe that he was allegedly involved in the improper handling of medication.

During the search, medication was allegedly found in his possession. Police said the man was unable to provide a satisfactory account of the medication when questioned.

He was subsequently arrested for allegedly contravening the Medicines Act and detained at a local police station.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development has strengthened its substance abuse rehabilitation programme with the launch of a multi-purpose sports facility at the Dr Fabian and Florence Ribeiro Treatment Centre in Cullinan, Tshwane.

The new facility will give people recovering from substance abuse an opportunity to take part in sport and physical activities as part of a holistic approach to rehabilitation.

The department says sport will help recovering service users build discipline, confidence and healthy routines, while also encouraging positive relationships and preparing them for life beyond the treatment centre.

Gauteng MEC for Social Development Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said recovery is about more than simply stopping substance use, highlighting the role of sport in helping people rebuild their confidence, relationships and sense of purpose.

The department says the facility will be integrated into individual rehabilitation programmes and will encourage recovering substance users to discover their abilities and develop positive interests.

A multi-stakeholder school search was conducted at HL Setlalentoa Secondary School in Zone 05, Ga-Rankuwa, on Thursday, 10 September 2026, following concerns over bullying, violence and alleged substance use among learners.

The operation was hosted by Ga-Rankuwa SAPS and supported by the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, Siyabangena and the Community Policing Forum (CPF).

According to authorities, the search followed an increase in complaints involving learners allegedly assaulting teachers and bullying other learners on the school premises.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has announced the next step in the redevelopment of three strategic government properties in the Pretoria CBD.

The department says a Request for Information (RFI) will be issued to the market in the coming weeks to help identify the most suitable technical, commercial and funding solutions for the redevelopment of the Telkom Towers Precinct, Public Works House and Central Government Office.

The projects are expected to have a significant economic impact on Pretoria, with the department highlighting the potential to:

🏗️ Create more than 12,700 construction jobs across the three projects
🏢 Unlock approximately 212,000m² of Gross Leasable Area for government and commercial use
💰 Attract billions of rands in investment to revitalise the Pretoria CBD
