A new video of the Deputy Mayor of the Bitou Municipality in Plettenberg Bay allegedly firing a gun, shows her handing the weapon to her bodyguard afterwards. The initial video showed Councillor Nokuzola Kolwapi shooting into the air to celebrate her son's homecoming ceremony in KwaNokuthula this past weekend following his initiation. In a statement, Kolwapi said no firearm was present and that it was a toy gun.
Following an enquiry to the Bitou Municipality by the municipal spokesperson Andile Namntu confirmed that the man being handed the weapon is a Bitou Municipal Law enforcement official, who is also Kolwapi's protector and driver. Several videos were posted online by the public who witnessed the event. The new video shows the law enforcement official taking the gun from Kolwapi after she fired it. Two members of the public have filed charges against her for pointing a firearm in public, and the discharging of a firearm in a municipal area. The municiality says this new development will form part of their detailed investigation which is currently underway.

How do foreign nationals end up in RDP houses? Simelane explained that the law allows an RDP beneficiary to sell their home, but only after living in it for at least 10 years and only to another qualifying South African citizen. “What does our policy say? Our policy says yes, after 10 years of occupation, you can sell the house, but you need to sell it to a South African who is part of the policy cover,” Simelane said in an interview with broadcaster Newzroom Afrika. However, she acknowledged what many residents have long complained about: some original beneficiaries illegally sell their RDP houses outside formal processes, including to foreign nationals. “When we go into every imbizo, in every township, we have people complaining, saying, ‘Minister, you say we do not qualify, but how come unregistered and undocumented foreigners are staying in these new houses?’” Simelane said. She conceded that the situation “looks unfair” and requires urgent intervention.

Traffic officials have issued a stern warning about road lawlessness due to a surge in long-distance travel, following the interception of a severely overcrowded bus on the N1 bypass in Polokwane. The cross-border bus, traveling from Gauteng to Malawi, had 117 passengers on board, exceeding its designed capacity of 65 passengers by 52. Authorities stressed that such violations pose a significant risk to lives, especially during peak travel periods, and warned that non-compliance with road traffic regulations will not be tolerated.
