Just as the South African agricultural sector is witnessing an annual recovery in its 2025/26 summer crop marketing year (MY), the 2025/26 MY for winter crops is also being touted as a year of recovery. When the 2025/26 MY for winter crops began, uncertainty abounded due to the unfavourable rainfall forecasts and higher input costs, which could have discouraged planting

At the Swartland Show in Moorreesburg, political analyst JP Landman likened the ANC-DA collaboration in South Africa’s government of national unity to the “clumsy fumbling” of young lovers.

It's official—For the first time, Zimbabwean blueberries will be exported to China. The announcement was made after the two countries signed a new protocol agreement in Beijing, following a series of negotiations that began in April 2024. The deal represents an unprecedented opportunity for local producers to access one of the world's fastest-growing blueberry markets.

The South African poultry industry is a crucial sector in the country's economy, worth around R65 billion and employing nearly 58,000 people. It's the second-largest agricultural sector and a significant contributor to food security, with chicken being the most consumed protein source in South Africa.

South Africa's maize industry is export-oriented. Over the past five years, the country has exported roughly 3 million tonnes each year. One of its largest markets is Zimbabwe, typically accounting for about 18% of annual exports. But in the near term, we may see these exports declining. There is a policy change that may lead to such an eventuality.

To expand the local industry, Saffricon has developed an out-grower program that includes selling saffron seeds to interested parties and supporting them in their growth. Saffricon founder Bennie Engelbrecht talks about the initiative, “It’s something new. You can’t just leave people on their own and expect them to be successful. So, I drive around a lot, because I have to give a grower that peace of mind that what he is doing is right. But that said, it’s also very important to remember that this is not a get rich quick crop. It takes time to give a proper yield.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s praise for Zimbabwe’s land reform during a speech at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show on August 29, 2025, has sparked backlash from South African agricultural leaders.

The recent data for August also paints a mixed picture. For example, the tractor sales are up 22% y/y, with 700 units sold. Meanwhile, the combine harvester sales were flat, with five units sold. The soft sales in combine harvester sales are not a significant concern given the higher volume of sales in the past few months.

Early morning HEADLINE news at this hour.

Agri SA,, vows to use all its resources to protect private property rights, which are the backbone of South Africa’s farming sector. CEO Johann Kotzé says land is critical as collateral for loans, with agriculture’s debt-to-GDP ratio at about 50%. Any threat to these rights risks food security and the sustainability of farming.

South Africa is focusing on making its agricultural sector stronger and more resilient while expanding its trade markets.
