Information

Twenty years ago, Farmingportal and Agriportal emerged from humble beginnings, driven by founders with deep roots in practical farming, radio, and television. What began as a vision to bridge the gap in agricultural media has grown into a globally recognized, independent platform delivering real-time farming and agriculture news 365 days a year. The journey to mastering online media was not without challenges, but through relentless hard work and passion, these platforms have become trusted voices in the global farming community.

Born out of hands-on farming experience and traditional media expertise, CRA MEDIA faced the steep learning curve of the digital world. The founders’ mantra—“what we start, we finish”—guided their efforts to create accessible, high-quality content for professional commercial farmers and emerging growers alike. Today, these platforms serve a diverse audience offering daily updates through easy-to-read articles, audio casts, and videos.

Operating independently, Farmingportal/Agriportal and AGRI NEWS NET rely on a dedicated media team spread across the world, working in their own environments to deliver consistent, high-quality content.

Over the years, Farmingportal/ Agriportal and AGRI NEWS NET have attracted significant attention from established media companies eager to acquire or partner with them. However, the founders remain steadfast in their commitment to independence, prioritizing their mission to provide “good news you can trust” without external influence. Recently, a well-known international media company expressed strong interest in investing in CRA MEDIA media platforms eyeing opportunities in South Africa’s vibrant agricultural sector. This interest extends to expanding online media, multimedia, audio, roaming news teams and video channels via satellite, full Television Channel aligning with the global shift toward digital agriculture, as seen in initiatives like the World Bank’s roadmap for digital farming transformation.

While the prospect of investment or total take over is tempting, the founders are not rushing to decide. Several ongoing programs, including enhancements to their content delivery and new multimedia projects, must be completed first. The platforms continue to innovate, covering trends ensuring they stay “one step ahead” in the industry. Their focus remains on empowering farmers—both commercial giants and smallholders.

We continue to shape the narrative of global agriculture, proving that with passion and perseverance, what starts from nothing can grow into something extraordinary. As they weigh future partnerships, their commitment to finishing what they started ensures that CRA MEDIA will remain trusted voices for farmers worldwide, delivering news that informs, inspires, and innovates.

VIEWPOINT

The agricultural sector thrives on the expertise and resilience of farmers who work the land daily, yet many farming and agriculture awards are judged by panels dominated by corporate workers and bureaucrats. This disconnect raises concerns about the fairness and relevance of such evaluations.Farmers with hands-on experience understand the challenges of soil management, weather uncertainties, and market fluctuations. Their practical knowledge ensures a grounded perspective when assessing innovation, sustainability, or productivity in farming. In contrast, judges with corporate or administrative backgrounds—often labeled as "pen pushers"—may prioritize metrics like financial reports or polished presentations over real-world impact. While corporate expertise can offer valuable insights into business scalability or policy, it often lacks the depth of lived experience. A farmer-led judging panel, or at least one balanced with seasoned practitioners, would better recognize the ingenuity and grit required to succeed in agriculture. This shift could also inspire trust among participants, ensuring awards reflect the realities of farming rather than corporate ideals.Including real farmers as judges isn’t just fair—it’s essential for celebrating authentic contributions to agriculture. Awards should honor those who feed the world, judged by those who know the soil best.

The crisis at OBP is not just an internal management issue – it is a national scandal. South Africa’s farmers are paying the price for years of neglect, political interference, and bureaucratic inertia. Saai will continue to engage Parliament, the Auditor-General, and agricultural partners to demand urgent reform that restores vaccine security and protects the livelihoods of South African farmers.
