🌾⚠️ 65 tonnes of protected oats seed. One case. A major warning for South Africa’s seed industry.

A recent brown-bag seed bootlegging case has put the spotlight firmly on Plant Breeders’ Rights, seed traceability, certification and accountable seed trade in South Africa.

The case involved the protected oats variety SSH4185, with at least 65 tonnes of propagating material reportedly multiplied, conditioned and marketed outside the authorised distribution chain.

But this story goes far beyond royalties.
It raises important questions around:
🌱 Plant Breeders’ Rights
📋 Seed certification and traceability
⚖️ Legal compliance
🏷️ Labelling and varietal identity
🤝 The responsibilities of farmers, processors and sellers

🚨 TLU SA SAYS THE TIME TO SPEAK IS NOW - SOUTH AFRICA’S FI****MS DEBATE IS HEATING UP!!

TLU SA has launched a national campaign opposing proposed amendments to the Fi****ms Control Act — warning that future changes could have far-reaching consequences for:
🚜 Farmers and rural communities
🦌 Hunters and the hunting economy
🎯 Sport shooters
🏠 Ordinary South Africans who legally own fi****ms for self-defence

Here’s the critical point:
👉 The new Fi****ms Control Amendment Bill has NOT yet been introduced in Parliament.

And that is exactly why TLU SA believes South Africans should become involved before the legislative process moves further.

The previous 2021 proposals included controversial changes affecting self-defence licensing, hunters, sport shooters, ammunition and firearm ownership — and attracted more than 118,000 public comments.

So what could happen if similar proposals return?

And what could it mean for farmers living far from immediate police response, South Africa’s hunting industry, rural businesses and lawful firearm owners?

🇿🇦 FMD: SOUTH AFRICA FIGHTS BACK
After months of battling one of South Africa’s most serious Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreaks, the fight has picked up steam.

New leadership. More vaccines. Greater private-sector involvement. Farmers being brought directly into the vaccination effort. And stronger cooperation between government, veterinarians and organised agriculture.

With Willie Aucamp now at the helm as Minister of Agriculture, and agricultural leaders including Dr Theo de Jager (SAAI) and Dr Danie Odendaal (V-Net) brought into the FMD Industry Coordination Council, July marked an important turning point.

💉 17 million vaccine doses procured
🐄 More than 8 million cattle vaccinated
🤝 Private vaccine access opened
📱 Authorised farmer self-vaccination introduced
🛡️ New national FMD control measures implemented

But South Africa is not there yet.

Veterinary capacity, livestock traceability, illegal animal movements, funding and infrastructure remain serious challenges.

Vaccines are our shield.
Cooperation is our strength.
