With International Women's Day being observed yesterday, here are 6 female-centric movies released over the years

1. avaL or thoDarkadhay
Directed by K Balachander, the film was released in 1974. Featuring Sujatha in the lead, the story revolved around Kavitha, a middle-class working-women who has a large family to look after without any support from the men. Kavitha sacrifices all her pleasure and in the end, she even sacrifices her fiancé for her sisters. Aval Oru Thodar Kadhai marks the debut of Sujatha and it had a successful run at the theatres for nearly 150 days.
2. moZHi
The movie was released in 2007 and was directed by Radha Mohan. The movie had Jyothika in the lead role. It was one of the important films in Jyothika’s career and it took her to peak as she boldly played the role of a deaf and dumb in the movie. Jyothika played Archana who hates men for her own good reasons, overcomes the doubt, and falls in love with Karthik (played by Prithiviraj). Jyothika won the State Film Awards for this movie.
3. snehgidhiyeh
This 2000 movie, directed by Priyadarshan featured Jyothinka, Tabu and Sharbani Mukherjee in lead roles. The movie was set in the background of college students who are deliberately set up for a murder and are accused falsely. The movie made an average box office collection but received many positive, critical reviews.
4. magaLir maTTum
The film was released in 1994 and was directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. It featured Revathi, Urvashi, Rohini in the lead roles. The film narrates a story of working women in a medium retail tailoring company and the hardships they go through. The movie was inspired from the American film ‘9 to 5’. The movie ran in theatres for more than 175 days.
5. aRam
Directed by Gopi Nainar, Nayanthara played the lead role in this 2017 movie. The movie focussed on the borewell dug in many places in the rural areas which create the issue of the kids falling into the well and losing their lives. Nayantahra plays the role of district collector who goes against the local politicians and other stereotypical power.
6. tharamaNi
Starring the multi-talented Andrea Jeremiah, the film directed by Ram narrates the emotional story of Althea, a single mother, whose husband has an affair with a man and, understanding his sexuality, parts ways from him. Later she is mistreated by her boss and the she fights against sexual discrimination at her work place. The movie showcases sexuality, gender bias and how society looks at a single mother if she finds love, thereafter. The movie was a sleeping box office hit.
