🚨 COSMO CITY LEADERS CALL FOR UNITED ACTION AGAINST GANGSTERISM

Concerns over gangsterism and youth-related crime continue to affect parts of Cosmo City, with community leaders warning that police and the CPF cannot fight the problem alone.

Councillor Lyborn Ndou and CPF leader Thabo Serage are calling on parents, schools and residents to become more involved in crime-prevention efforts.

Among the concerns raised are bullying, youth involvement in gangs, dangerous weapons, unreported crimes and poor attendance at community crime meetings.

🗣️ “People of Cosmo City should stand up, come together and be willing to fight crime,” Serage told the Cosmo City Chronicle.

The CPF says residents with information can play an important role in helping authorities respond to crime, while parents are being urged to take greater responsibility and participate in community safety initiatives.

COMMUNITY | ZANDSPRUIT

What began with one hungry schoolchild has grown into an initiative feeding more than 90 people in Zandspruit.

Bana Ba Thari Soup Kitchen provides meals to around 70 children and 20 senior citizens, particularly on weekends and during school holidays.

Founder Sonto Ndlovu says she was moved to act after meeting a learner who had saved her school lunch to take home to her sick mother.

Today, the initiative is fighting hunger while hoping to expand to reach even more vulnerable families.

YOUNG WOMEN, ALCOHOL & SAFETY | SPECIAL REPORT

Are we doing enough to create safer social spaces for young women?

New research highlighted in a report by Cosmo City Chronicle contributor Mzukona Mantshontsho raises serious concerns about binge drinking among young women and how alcohol can intersect with HIV risk, consent, coercion and unequal relationships.

The report goes beyond telling young women simply to “be careful”.

Public-health researcher Dr Zoe Duby argues that young women need safer social spaces, better access to prevention technologies and honest education about consent and coercion — while communities must also challenge the environments and behaviours that place them at risk.

The article also compares perspectives from South Africa and Nigeria and brings the issue directly into our community through the experience of a 17-year-old Cosmo City learner.

What pressures do women today face that older generations may not fully understand?

That question sparked an interesting conversation when women of different generations gathered at Gate of Life Church in Randburg for a Women’s Day “Ladies Hangout”.

Marriage, independence, equality, relationships, burnout, faith and family were all on the table — and not everyone agreed.

Pastor Basetsana Gaihei also shared an important message for women going through difficult seasons: take life one day at a time and don't be afraid to seek support.
