🌿🥾 Die Bosveld – Red Trail Adventure! 🥾🌿

We started a bit later than planned (rookie move 😅), and took on the Red Trail. It’s definitely technical, with lots of climbing over rocks and plenty of ups and downs. At times it felt like the trail just kept going up… and then up again!

It was tough — especially since we’re not super fit yet — but we laughed our way through it. Let’s just say it was a proper workout disguised as a nature walk! 💪😂

Despite the challenge, the bushveld scenery was beautiful and peaceful, with lovely views that made every climb worth it. Just take it slow, wear good shoes, and bring enough water.

All in all, a great adventure and a fun reminder that we might need to train a little more before the next “technical” hike! 😄🌳

Hiked at Faerie Glen Nature Reserve this weekend and whew… my cardio got humbled real quick 😂

That uphill had me rethinking everything, but the view at the top? Solid 10/10 — worth every dramatic step. It’s calm, spotless, and somehow makes you forget you’re still in Pretoria.

Would I go back? Absolutely. 🌿😅

Next up: Bosveld, we’re coming for you! 💪🌄

And off we went… Piesangs Kloof, here we come!!
We were up bright and early to prep our little monkeys 🐒 — their first full night alone, so we had to make sure everyone was sorted before hitting the road. By 10am we were done and dusted, car packed and ready. It’s about an hour and a half drive for us, with a quick food stop because honestly… we didn’t want to braai on our first overnight not knowing what to expect 😅
We arrived just after 12 and were warmly welcomed by the very friendly owner, who explained everything clearly — where to park, where to start, and casually warned us that the stone-layered hill is never-ending. We were so excited we nodded and carried on… big mistake 🤣
First proper hike with backpacks weighing about 12kg each. Let’s just say… reality hit fast. The bags were heavy, the legs complained, but after adjusting our straps it got a bit better. We were welcomed by a group of monkeys just sitting there, silently judging us as we passed by 🙈
Up the hill we went. Slowly. Very slowly. And wow — the owner was NOT joking. That stone hill is TOUGH. After a few metres we were lying under a tiny tree just to catch our breath. Who knew stones could feel so hard and yet so inviting at the same time?
But then… we reached the top. And oh wow 😍 What a view! Absolutely breathtaking. That alone made the four hours up the mountain totally worth it.
We set up camp and were then blessed with a proper thunderstorm ⛈️ At least the tent didn’t leak — small wins! Our sleeping setup though… yeah, that needs some serious rethinking before the next trip 😴
The next morning we were up early, packed up, and set our sights on going down — and downhill it definitely was! Stunning scenery, fresh air, and meeting a few climbers along the way.
If you want to test your fitness or just do something different, we highly recommend this trail. Would we do the up and down in one day? Nope. Can it be done? Definitely — just not by us 😂
Thank you Piesangs Kloof for such a wonderful and unforgettable experience. We’ll be back! 💚⛰️

After Piesangskloof we were definitely in recovery mode 😅 So we went looking for something a little easier and decided on Red Barn — and it was the perfect choice.

Beautiful, well-marked trails, mostly in the shade (our sore muscles were very grateful 🙌). A really nice, easy walk suitable for any fitness level.

If you’re looking for a relaxed outdoor stroll without your legs questioning their life choices, this is definitely the place to go 🌿🚶‍♀️

Good morning everyone! ☀️

Apologies for the radio silence — life happened, as it does. You know the drill: work, chaos, house stuff… all the things.

Anyway, here’s a little recap of our experience last week at Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve.
We arrived slightly later than planned (because of course we did). The trail is quite popular, so there were plenty of fellow hikers out and about. We were welcomed by some impalas, and along the way we also spotted a grey duiker — always a treat!

The trail itself is well marked, easy to follow, and honestly perfect for any fitness level. It’s a great starter hike that still lets you feel completely immersed in nature and reminds you why people actually enjoy hiking for fun.

And today… we’re heading out on our first overnight hike! 🎒✨
Super excited and a little nervous — we’ll keep you posted on how it goes!

Today we did a short and gentle hike at House Museum, mainly because my wife hurt her back and we needed something easygoing. What an absolute gem of a trail! 🌳
Despite being a shorter route, it was peaceful, scenic, and honestly just what we needed. Sometimes slowing down makes you appreciate a place even more.
A bit of history for those who don’t know: Smuts House was the home of General Jan Smuts, one of South Africa’s most influential historical figures. Built in 1909, the house is a simple corrugated-iron structure reflecting Smuts’ love for nature and a modest lifestyle. Today it stands as a museum, preserving his legacy and the beautiful surroundings he cherished.
If you’re looking for an easy, relaxing walk with loads of history and nature, this one is definitely worth it. We’ll be back again — hopefully with a fully healed back next time 😊

People think we return to the mountains for the views.

But that’s not the real reason.

If it were just about beauty, one trip would be enough. A few photos. A memory. A box checked.

Yet we keep coming back.

We come back because the mountains don’t rush us.
Because they don’t ask what we do for a living.
Because they don’t measure our worth by productivity.

Out there, you’re allowed to exist without explanation.

You walk.
You breathe.
You listen.

And slowly, something inside you softens.

The mountains remind us of a pace we forgot. A life where time isn’t constantly chasing us. Where conversations don’t compete with notifications. Where silence isn’t awkward — it’s comforting.

We come back because the mountains don’t lie.

They show us how small we are — not to shame us, but to free us. They remind us that our problems, while real, are not the center of the universe.

And in that realization, there is relief.

We return because the mountains feel honest.
No filters.
No pretending.
No applause.

Just effort, patience, and humility.

And maybe, deep down, that’s what we’re really looking for.

Not escape.
Not adventure.
But a place that asks nothing from us — except to be present.

That’s why one hike is never enough.
