🔥 Fire Update: Multiple Fires
🕒 15:00 – 13 November 2025

The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Fire Services, together with partners from CapeNature, confirm that firefighting efforts continue in the Montagu/Ashton and De Doorns areas.

⚡ In De Doorns, firefighters responded to a blaze ignited by lightning high up on the Matroosberg mountain a few days ago. Crews and equipment have been actively engaged in suppressing the fire; however, it continues to move down the mountain. The hot weather is creating challenging and uncomfortable firefighting conditions but, teams remain hopeful that cooler night temperatures will aid their efforts.
There is currently no threat to any property.

🌄 The fire that started last Friday in the Kogmanskloof mountains above Zolani, outside Ashton, continues to frustrate firefighting efforts. A small active spot remains on the high peaks above the Guano Caves near Montagu. On the opposite side of the mountain, above Sarah’s Valley, the fireline has spread into rocky areas. The slightly cooler temperatures today have been assisting teams in their containment efforts.

There is currently no danger to property.

HIGH COURT SLAPS EMALAHLENI MUNICIPALITY WITH R650 MILLION FINE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES

The High Court of South Africa, Mpumalanga Division, has ordered Emalahleni Local Municipality to pay a R650 million fine after it pleaded guilty to multiple environmental offences under the National Environmental Management Act and the National Water Act.

The municipality was found guilty of unlawfully disposing of waste, polluting water resources, and failing to comply with environmental authorisations and directives. Between March 2019 and March 2025, untreated sewage was allowed to overflow from municipal sewer systems into tributaries of the Olifants River, affecting areas such as the Witbank Dam, Naawpoort River, and Klein Olifants River.

The Green Scorpions and Blue Scorpions initiated investigations following numerous community complaints, leading to the municipality’s prosecution. Represented by its Municipal Manager, Mr Sizwe Mayisela, the municipality entered a plea and sentence agreement with the State.

The court imposed a fine of R650 million or ten years’ imprisonment, with R150 million or three years suspended for five years, on condition that the municipality does not commit further pollution-related offences. In addition, R500 million of the fine must be used for the rehabilitation and repair of wastewater infrastructure by 2031.

State Advocate Beauty Cibangu emphasised the serious harm caused by the pollution, warning of its impact on ecosystems, public health, and local economies.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the ruling, saying it demonstrates the State’s commitment to holding offenders accountable for environmental crimes.

Day 6 (feels like 60)
update 11.30, 13/11/2025

Although the Napier Bredasdorp side of the mountain (North) has been contained two days ago the battle on the South side of the mountain (Boskloof rd) and the head of fire continued unabated.

The threats to agricultural lands & infrastructure and risk of significant spread across a much larger landscape have been ongoing from day 1.

Today, significant smoke can be expected in the aera. Effort and lots of sweat have been put into the last 3 days to stop the fire lines within a large alien plant forest, but have not been successful. Burning operations have started last night and will take most of today to complete safely. THANK YOU for all the support from near and afar.

Flare-ups on the other lines are still a threat and are being attended to by landowners.

We are very pleased that B7 (large fire truck from Bredasdorp Overberg District Municipality Fire was recovered early this morning. The urgency of this recovery is due to the risk of fire (to the truck) and repair of truck. Fire Season is here and that truck needs be back online ASAP. Thank you to the recovery team.

Again, thank you for all the donations we received. This makes a big difference to the firefighters on the lines. That extra cooldrink or snack adds so much value to them feeling appreciated.
