Job Despair Grips Four South African Provinces as Unemployment Soars

As winter fades in South Africa, a shadow hangs over the North West, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Cape. According to Stats SAโ€™s latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey for Q2 2025, released this week, these provinces are seeing a growing number of people giving up on finding jobs, a sign of deepening despair among job seekers.

The North West paints the bleakest picture, with an expanded unemployment rate of 54.7%, meaning over half its working-age population is either jobless or has quit the search entirely.

Mpumalangaโ€™s expanded rate sits at 48.4%, KwaZulu-Natal at 47.9%, while Limpopo (47.7%) and the Eastern Cape (47.6%) are also ringing alarm bells.

Nationally, the labour force grew slightly, adding 19,000 employed to reach 16.8 million, but unemployment surged by 140,000 to 8.4 million. The official unemployment rate ticked up from 32.9% to 33.2%.

For the North West, our province, home of our beloved to Klerksdorp, this crisis hits hard. As job creation lags, the question looms: Can these provinces bounce back, or will more give up hope?
