*Full-scale emergency at top South African airport activated*

Airports Company South Africa’s *King Shaka International Airport* (KSIA) is conducting its full-scale Aerodrome Emergency Exercise on *26 September 2025.*

This critical safety drill, mandated every two years, is carried out in accordance with South African aviation legislation and the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The exercise forms part of ACSA’s ongoing commitment to the highest levels of public health, safety, and security.

The exercise is designed to test and strengthen the airport’s and supporting services’ readiness in the event of an aircraft disaster.

It ensures that all systems, protocols, and personnel are fully prepared to respond and effectively manage aircraft or airport incidents.

This large-scale simulation will involve multiple stakeholders, including the South African Police Service and the eThekwini Disaster Risk Management Centre.

It will also involve the Fire and Rescue Service, the South African National Defence Force, Metro Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Traffic Police, and other critical partners.

“Members of the public can expect to see heightened activity in and around the airport precinct during the exercise,” Acsa said.

Airports Company South Africa assured the public that this is a planned simulation only and not an actual emergency.

“Importantly, normal airport operations will continue without disruption throughout the exercise,” Acsa said.

*KZN - SANRAL TRAFFIC ADVISORY*

Temporary Road Closures On N2 Northbound Between Sezela Interchange And Park Rynie Interchange

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of temporary road closures on the N2 north bound between Sezela Interchange and Park Rynie Interchange for installation of a pipe bridge onto the N2 Umzinto River Bridge as part of the new South Coast Water Pipeline.

*The temporary road closures will take place as follows*

• *Morning Closure*
N2 Northbound (Port Shepstone to Durban)
Daily from 05:00 to 6:00, *Wednesday, 24 September 2025 to Wednesday, 15 October 2025*

• *Afternoon Closure*
N2 North Bound (Port Shepstone to Durban)
Daily from 15:00 to 16:00, *Wednesday, 24 September 2025 to Wednesday, 15 October 2025*

Light motor vehicles can divert off the N2 and onto the R102 at the Sezela Interchange and rejoin the N2 at the Park Rynie Interchange. Due to potential safety risks heavy motor vehicles will be stacked on the N2 for the duration of the closures.

We understand that these road closures cause major disruption, so have planned them to take place at times when the disruption is minimised.

Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period or find suitable staging areas to avoid major congestion.

Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of the closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.

Light vehicle traffic, as well as emergency services and traffic management are advised to make use of alternative routing, said Lowe.

Traffic accommodation teams with the assistance of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), have carefully planned the closures and will manage and monitor them for their full duration. SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s patience during the ongoing major infrastructure construction.

*The closure locations and a detailed alternative route guide is included below*

*N2 Northbound (Port Shepstone to Durban)*
N2 North bound fully closed at the Umzinto River Bridge

*The available alternative route to traffic*
R102 Northbound - A detour will be in place at the Sezela Interchange for Light Motor Vehicles only, to join the R102. Light Motor Vehicles can rejoin the N2 Northbound at the Park Rynie Interchange.

Hi everyone

We would like to bring an urgent matter under all trucking companies but more importantly drivers attention.

Bains Kloof Pass is NOT accessible for trucks!

The pass is situated outside of Wellington in the Western Cape on route to Worcester, Ceres and Wolseley. In recent years there has been a significant increase in trucks using the road and consequently getting stuck. We believe the issue is caused by the use off navigational apps, which does not pose options to flag the route as inaccessible for trucks.

Great efforts have been made to upgrade the road and the warnings prior to entry but to no avail. Drivers deliberately ignore these warnings on the road itself. The matter normally also gets worse when issues occur on the Du Tiot pass and N1 when alternative routes have to be used by drivers. The only accessible alternative is staying on the R44 via Tulbach with a major detour.

The problem is that Bains Kloof Pass has been build by Bains himself... and that is a long long long time ago. So long it was still a horse trail. As you would thus imagine the route is very narrow leaving very little space for maneuvering even an SUV around the sharp corners let alone a Link. Every time a truck goes up more damage is being done to the very fragile stone built bariers and once again leaving the truck stuck somewhere on route.

To add to this the road has what is called "die Preekstoel." This is an overhanging rock in the middel of the pass which larger small vehicles scaresly scrape thru the bottom of. So you can imagine... trucks can not pass at all! Please google this if you want to see what I am talking about.

We would thus like to please urge ALL of you to spread the word in your community about this road. Obviously the tawing company who normally assisit getting the trucks out will loose a lot of money if the word is spread sufficiently but I think we can all agree that in the difficult financial times additional unnecessary costs and time lost due to salvage operations to trucking companies for a preventable error can have great benifit to everyone.

Your assistance in spreading the word is greatly appreciated. We realize a lot of you have never been in the Boland and we invite you to come drive Bainskloof with a small vehicle... it is a privilege to have this road. Let's all work together keeping it a road to enjoy for many years to come.
