Bail denied for Gqeberha businessman accused of girlfriend’s murder

The Humansdorp Magistrates’ Court has denied bail to prominent Gqeberha businessman Robert Evans (58), who stands accused of the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Vanessa van Rensburg (36).

Evans, arrested on 9 May 2025 by SAPS and the Hawks at his business premises, faces charges of murder, kidnapping, and defeating the ends of justice. Van Rensburg’s body was discovered with multiple injuries in Evans’s holiday home in Oyster Bay during the early hours of Easter Sunday, 20 April.

Van Rensburg, a mother of two and employee at Evans’s company, had reportedly been in a relationship with him since May 2023.

During a series of formal bail hearings, Prosecutor Bianca Burger successfully argued that Evans posed a significant flight risk due to his financial resources. The state also highlighted inconsistencies in his account and attempts to mislead the court regarding his role in the business to bolster his bail application.

The court ruled that Evans failed to prove exceptional circumstances justifying his release. The magistrate also emphasized the seriousness of the charges within the broader context of South Africa’s ongoing battle against gender-based violence.

The case has been postponed to 18 August 2025 for further investigation.

AfriForum points finger at Ramaphosa for U.S. 30% tariff on South African exports

South African civil rights group AfriForum has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Government of National Unity (GNU) over a pending 30% tariff on South African exports to the United States, scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2025.

The tariff, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, stems from trade concerns under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The U.S. cited a significant trade imbalance, noting South Africa’s $14.8 billion in exports compared to $5.8 billion in American goods entering the country.

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel accused the South African government of failing to engage meaningfully during a 90-day grace period granted by the U.S., alleging that concerns raised were dismissed as misinformation.

Kriel said the tariffs could severely impact the local economy and cited government policies, including the Expropriation Act, as contributing to strained relations with Washington. He also claimed that proposals made by AfriForum to address the issue were rejected, with the organisation facing accusations of treason.

In response, President Ramaphosa defended the government’s approach, stating that 77% of U.S. goods currently enter South Africa duty-free. He added that negotiations were ongoing and referenced a trade framework submitted to the U.S. in May. Ramaphosa described the tariff as “punitive” and called for continued diplomatic engagement to resolve the dispute.

Conflicting SAPS statements emerge over disbanded Political Killings Task Team

Conflicting statements from senior SAPS officials have sparked public concern over the controversial disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team.

Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, claimed in an interview with Thabo Mdluli on Newzroom Afrika that he was instructed by National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to shut down the unit.

Sibiya alleged that Masemola acted on a directive from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, and that this instruction was formalised in a letter. He said 121 sensitive case dockets were subsequently removed from the team and sent to his office in Pretoria.

But General Masemola has flatly denied these claims. Speaking at a media briefing in Vanderbijlpark today, July 9, Masemola stated, “I am sure you have not seen any letter that I have signed to close the unit.” He insisted no such directive had crossed his desk and maintained that he had not authorised the unit's disbandment.

This comes after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused both Sibiya and Mchunu of interfering in police operations by disbanding the task team which was investigating politically sensitive cases involving a crime syndicate linked to politicians, police officers, and prosecutors.

He also revealed that five of the withdrawn dockets contained instructions for arrests, suggesting that the task team's abrupt closure may have been intended to shield powerful individuals from prosecution.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says he was aware of General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s media briefing, but President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was not aware of it.
