Madlanga Commission to begin public hearings on Wednesday, 17 September

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is set to begin its public hearings on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria.

Chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate allegations of criminal syndicate infiltration in law enforcement, intelligence, and judicial structures.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt‑Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is scheduled to be the first witness, with testimony expected to span five days.

The commission has been allocated R147.9 million over six months to carry out its work and has emphasized measures to protect witnesses and ensure the integrity of evidence.

The hearings are widely anticipated, with observers and civil society closely watching to see whether the commission will expose the alleged corruption and influence reform in South Africa’s justice system.

Ramaphosa urges competent leadership ahead of 2026 local government elections

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on political parties, especially the ANC, to put forward skilled and ethical candidates in next year’s local government elections.

He warned that poor leadership and internal factionalism have weakened public trust and hurt service delivery in municipalities across the country.

Ramaphosa stressed the need for accountability and oversight, saying that municipal failures are often linked to corruption and mismanagement.

He also highlighted the importance of a professional public service to ensure communities receive basic services effectively.

With the 2026 local elections approaching, the president’s message underscores the urgency of restoring competence and integrity in local governance.

KZN Health defends acting nursing manager appointment at IALCH

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has defended the appointment of Dr H. Ndemera as Acting Nursing Manager at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH), denying allegations of favoritism.

The department said the Nursing Manager position was advertised twice but no qualified candidate was found, leading to Dr Ndemera, a Critical Care Specialist Nurse with a PhD in Nephrology, being asked to assume the role.

Dr Ndemera has more than 25 years of experience in South Africa’s healthcare system, previously worked at IALCH before 2015, and speaks isiZulu and Venda.

The department also refuted claims that public funds were misused for a Christmas event and emphasized that Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane was not involved in the appointment process.

IALCH, an 846-bed specialized hospital in Durban, has faced operational challenges, including power outages due to municipal strikes.

Mbeki explains why foundations withdrew from National Dialogue

Former President Thabo Mbeki has provided a detailed explanation for why several major foundations, including his own, withdrew from National Dialogue.

Speaking at the University of South Africa (UNISA), Mbeki said the foundations’ decision was driven by concerns over rushed planning, a lack of credibility, and the potential misuse of public funds.

He stressed that these issues undermined the dialogue’s purpose as a neutral platform for citizens to address the country’s social and economic challenges.

Mbeki also pointed to attempts to politicise the process, which he said threatened its integrity. “We could not support a process that appeared to be hijacked for political ends,” he said, underlining that the withdrawal was aimed at protecting the dialogue’s credibility.

He highlighted that the foundations had repeatedly raised concerns and suggested improvements, but when those efforts failed, withdrawal became the only responsible course of action. Mbeki’s explanation casts a spotlight on the challenges of maintaining transparency and accountability in high-profile national initiatives.

South Africa officially legalises e-hailing services as public transport

South Africa has officially recognised e-hailing services, such as Uber and Bolt, as legal public transport.

This follows the recent amendment to the National Land Transport Act, which brings e-hailing platforms under formal regulation for the first time.

Under the new law, all e-hailing drivers must obtain operating licenses from Provincial Regulatory Entities and hold valid Professional Driving Permits (PDPs).

Vehicles are required to display company branding and install panic buttons to enhance passenger and driver safety.

E-hailing companies must also register with regulators and comply with company and tax laws, with penalties for non-compliance including fines of up to R100,000 or imprisonment for up to two years.

The move is expected to level the playing field between traditional taxi operators and ride-hailing services while improving safety standards and operational transparency in South Africa’s public transport sector.
