🚨 Illegal Foreign Syndicates Exploit SA Public Healthcare for Drug Trafficking
Authorities have uncovered a syndicate of illegal foreigners posing as patients in South African clinics and hospitals to collect prescription medication, which is then smuggled to Zimbabwe and Malawi for illegal resale.

The operation takes advantage of overburdened public health facilities and weak oversight, with commonly targeted drugs including ARVs, painkillers, and other high-demand medications β€” all distributed free or at subsidized rates in SA, then sold for profit across borders.

This growing black-market trade is putting pressure on our healthcare system and depriving citizens of critical medication.

SAPS Launches Major Crime Crackdown in Lejweleputswa

The SAPS in Lejweleputswa District intensified crime-fighting efforts through Operation Shanela II, targeting high-crime areas in Odendaalsrus and Welkom. Led by Brigadier Envor Solomon, the multidisciplinary operation focused on tracing suspects, drug and firearm searches, immigration enforcement, and traffic law compliance.

The operation involved multiple SAPS units and partners such as Home Affairs, SARS, Eskom, traffic officials, and private security. It resulted in 19 arrests, including nine wanted suspects, and the impounding of eight vehicles. Authorities also issued 29 traffic fines and addressed 10 liquor-related offences.

SAPS says it will continue high-impact operations to maintain law and order in the Free State.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) says it has noted with concern that a number of independently owned supermarkets are still not adhering to the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

This comes after the commission conducted a series of inspections in rural and peri-urban areas and uncovered serious violations that threaten consumer safety and market integrity.

The violations include selling expired food and failing to label products correctly.

NCC’s Head of Complaints and Investigations, Prudence Moilwa says expired goods are still found on shelves in some supermarkets.

β€œIt does look like the management of the Supermarkets is not necessarily clearing the stock to ensure that things that have expired, things that are not good for consumption, are kept off the shop floors. And this may result in what we have seen in the past, where consumers suffer foodborne illnesses and also are exposed to the kind of food that is not fit for human consumption.”
