Literacy Day

I taught Lethu how to read at 2 years old, not because I wanted her to read fast, but because I wanted her to learn at her own pace.

We started with just 5 minutes a day — not only reading to her, but reading with her.

By 5, she was reading chapter books. Today, at 6 and in Grade 2, she has not only developed a love for reading but a deep love for learning.

She even wrote her very own book, Ester and Ella’s Mystery.

My mission was never to rush her. It was to help her discover the joy of learning.
And that is the power of literacy.

Literacy Day

I taught Lethu how to read at 2 years old — not because I wanted her to read fast, but because I wanted her to have the freedom to take as much time as she needed to learn.

By the age of 5, she was reading chapter books, and more importantly, she had developed such a deep love for learning.

My mission was simply to teach her how to read at her own pace, without pressure and without rushing the process.
What I didn’t realise was that teaching her to read would give her so much more than literacy.

It made her love reading.
It made her love learning.
It made her curious.

It made her want to know more.
And that, to me, is so powerful.
Sometimes we focus so much on how quickly our children learn that we forget to focus on helping them love learning itself.

For me, it was never about how early Lethu could read.

It was about giving her the confidence and freedom to learn at her own pace — and enjoy the journey.

And watching that love for learning grow has been one of the most beautiful parts of being her mom.

She had her second Speech Day today, and she was SO excited to share her speech with her teacher and classmates. I have honestly never seen anyone this excited to present a speech.

I called her after school and asked how it went. Her response? “I nailed it!”

I’m not entirely sure how true that is, but the confidence alone earned her ice cream in the middle of the week.
