Inspired by a legend who won a Fools award and who was born on April Fools Day.
Dokoncane Alfred Nokwe
Respected Durban thespian, Alfred Nokwe, has been described as a laugh-a-minute character whose legacy will live for decades.
Nokwe was born in Port St Johns and came to Durban with his mother at the age of 5. He never knew his father and became an orphan at 14.

Nokwe became a municipal clerk and secretary of the Beatrice Street YMCA (Young Men Christian Association). He was later appointed district sales manager for SA Breweries, before moving into the entertainment industry full time.
He featured in 11 theatrical productions and 24 television drama series, including Ifa LakwaMthethwa and uDeliwe. He also acted in Cry the Beloved Country, directed by Darrel Roodt, Kill Slade, directed by Bruce McFarlane and the TV mini-series of Shaka Zulu, directed by William Faure. He also took part in a documentary about the forced removal of people from Cato Manor
"His home was always the first stop for actors and musicians when visiting Durban. The likes of Gibson Kente and any other artists who couldn't afford hotels while visiting Durban would sleep at our home. We would cook up a feast and my dad would rehearse with the artists on his piano the whole night," said Tu
But his biggest passion was nurturing young talent from Durban's townships. The family runs the Amajika Arts Institution which produced the likes of soapie star Leleti Khumalo and gospel singer Deborah Fraser.
