Could cutting-edge nanotechnology be the answer to cleaner drinking water in South Africa? 🔬💧

Researchers at Durban University of Technology (DUT) have developed a specialised magnetic powder capable of removing microplastics from water - a breakthrough that could revolutionise water treatment.

💬 “This magnetic cleaning powder binds microplastics, which can then be removed with a magnet - even in real drinking-water samples,” explain experts Riona Indhur, postdoctoral research fellow, and Sheena Kumari, water scientist, both at DUT.

The innovation removed up to - 94% of microplastics in tests, offering a practical solution where conventional filtration struggles.

Originally reported on The Conversation Africa , this could be a major step toward safer, cleaner water for communities across South Africa and beyond.

📡Real-time visibility is becoming essential to rebuild South Africa’s water future 💧.

IOTDC is stepping into the sector with advanced IoT solutions designed to help utilities improve monitoring, reduce losses, and strengthen national water resilience.

💬“IOTDC was started to bring best-of-breed IoT solutions to the South African market,” says Tiaan Coetsee, CEO and co-founder of IOTDC. “We initially found success in the telco space, but soon expanded into mining and utilities. Entering the water sector was a natural step for us – the water sector is facing critical challenges that affects every citizen in the country.”

As utilities move toward smart, data-driven operations, IoT technologies will play a key role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and stable water supply for communities across South Africa.

💧Water meters are more than just boxes by the curb - when they’re non-compliant or inaccurate, they’re quietly draining South Africa’s water supply and municipal revenue.

According to Conver-Tek (Pty) Ltd Managing Director Bevan Davis, and backed by insights from Davis & Deale, incorrect metering undermines efforts to manage water sustainably.

💬 “Non-compliant water meters are bleeding South Africa dry,” writes Bevan Davis.

If meters don’t meet regulatory standards (or if they age or under-register consumption), municipalities end up losing vast amounts of water - and citizens may get unfairly billed or suffer supply issues. It’s vital we insist on legally compliant, accurately calibrated meters to safeguard water infrastructure and support responsible consumption.

💧Groundwater could provide a lifeline for water-stressed towns across South Africa - if managed legally and responsibly.

According to the Borehole Water Association of Southern Africa (BWA), safe, certified borehole drilling can ease the pressure on municipal water systems.

💬 “Illegally tapping into municipal water supplies puts additional pressure on already strained systems,” says BWA president Derek Whitfield.

💬“More than 80% of South Africa’s towns depend on groundwater as their primary source of safe potable water. This situation emphasises the need in our country of more trained and certified borehole contractors,” adds Albertus Lombaard, BWA Drilling Division Technical Advisor.

Legal groundwater access - via properly drilled and certified boreholes - helps safeguard aquifers, secure safe potable water, and relieve overburdened municipal systems.

💧South Africa’s water future just got a dose of realism - and responsibility - with the rollout of the revised national water & sanitation norms. Under the updated regulations, new developments may not be connected unless wastewater systems can cope.

“In simple terms, you can’t connect new developments if your wastewater system cannot cope,” Ayesha Laher, director of AHL Water, explains. “This is an important step to prevent overloading already failing treatment works.”

This shift is vital to prevent further strain on overloaded systems, protect communities, and ensure sustainable growth and sanitation infrastructure across the country.

🚆South Africa takes a major stride towards sustainable infrastructure

Transnet SOC Ltd has entered a landmark partnership with AFD - Agence Française de Développement, backed by the European Union (EU), to accelerate decarbonisation across ports, rail and pipelines. Under the agreement, AFD will provide a €300 million (≈ R6 billion) sustainability-linked loan to support Transnet’s clean energy initiatives and infrastructure revitalisation.

💬 “The funding package from AFD will assist us in revitalising our infrastructure while supporting the clean energy initiatives under the capital investment programme. In addition, this initiative will contribute significantly to supporting Transnet’s decarbonisation journey while actively exploring the company’s strategic role and potential opportunities within the green hydrogen value chain,” said Transnet Group CEO Michelle Phillips.

The funding also paves the way for modernising port infrastructure, rehabilitating 550 km of railway, and purchasing 300 GWh of renewable electricity per year - a key step toward South Africa’s low-carbon future.
