NATO countries agreed Wednesday to massively ramp up their defence spending to satisfy US President Donald Trump, who hailed it as a "monumental win" for America - and reaffirmed his country's commitment to protect its European allies.

Trump cut a jubilant figure after NATO's 32 countries agreed to his headline target of five percent of GDP on defence spending following two days of talks in The Hague.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday said close ties between Europe and the United States under Donald Trump were key to ensuring Kyiv defeated the Russian invasion, as he urged a trial for President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky signed an accord with the Council of Europe to set up a special tribunal to try top officials over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as he made his first visit since the start of the conflict to the France-based rights body.

Marches in Kenya to mark a year since massive anti-government demos turned violent on Wednesday, with eight killed and at least 400 injured as protesters held running battles with police, who flooded Nairobi's streets with tear gas and sealed off government buildings with barbed wire.

Initially peaceful commemorations descended into chaos as scattered groups ripped up flagstones to throw projectiles at security forces and chanted for the resignation of President William Ruto.

British oil major Shell said Wednesday it was not in talks with BP to acquire its rival, after the Wall Street Journal reported there had been preliminary discussions.

A tie-up between Shell and BP would be one of the biggest mergers ever in the oil and gas industry and would give it added heft against US oil majors ExxonMobil and Chevron, and France's TotalEnergies.
