The iPhone has come a long way in South Africa and so has the price tag.
When the iPhone 3G officially launched here in 2008, it started at R6,389. By 2025, the iPhone 17 was selling from R20,799. Now, the latest generation has taken the number even further, with the iPhone 18 coming in at R33,250.
That’s more than R26,000 above the price of the first iPhone officially sold in South Africa.
Of course, comparing launch prices across 18 years isn’t as simple as looking at the numbers. Exchange rates, inflation, storage, technology and Apple’s pricing strategy have all played a role, but one thing is clear: the iPhone price story in South Africa has changed dramatically.
Would you still pay R33,250 for the latest iPhone?
