GRADE 12 LEARNER DIES AT INITIATION SCHOOL

MAHIKENG – The North West Department of Education has expressed shock and deep sadness following the death of 19-year-old Grade 12 learner, Onalenna Booi, from Tiego Tawana Secondary School in Dithakong East Village, near Mahikeng.

Booi allegedly died after being forcefully taken to an initiation school shortly after completing his final matric examinations in late November 2025. According to reports, the learner’s family was unaware of his whereabouts and subsequently reported the matter to the police. His body was discovered last Friday, 26 December 2025.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the school community, with Tiego Tawana Secondary School Principal, Pogiso Tshipo, describing Booi as a determined learner with a promising future.
"As the school principal for this learner, I am extremely devastated by this sad news. I was expecting a bachelor pass from him because he was one of the hard-working learners," said Tshipo.

"I remember speaking to him around September 2025, and he promised to do well in his examinations. He was naughty just like all learners, but when he started Grade 12, his behaviour drastically changed. You could see hunger and determination in him."

Tshipo added that the loss has deeply affected the school, both emotionally and administratively.
"At our school, I had 59 Grade 12 learners. Next year, I will be releasing results to only 58 learners. I honestly don’t know how we are going to handle this process as a school," he said.

The MEC for Education in the North West, Viola Motsumi, conveyed heartfelt condolences to Booi’s family and the broader school community.
"On behalf of the North West Department of Education, I hereby wish to convey my sincerest condolences to the entire family and the school community of Tiego Tawana Secondary School," said MEC Motsumi.

"It is really sad to receive such news while we, as a country, are awaiting the results of the Class of 2025."

Motsumi expressed confidence that the South African Police Service would thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the learner's death and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. She further confirmed that psychosocial support would be provided to the bereaved family, learners, and teachers during this difficult period.

A memorial service for Onalenna Booi will be held on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, at 08h00 at the Tiego Tawana Secondary School Hall. The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, 03 January 2026, in Dithakong East.

NORTH WEST — Festive season crime prevention operations have resulted in the seizure of drugs in Vryburg and the arrest of a suspect in Ipelegeng, as police intensify efforts to curb drug-related criminal activity in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District.

In Vryburg, police conducted intelligence-driven raids under the Shanela 2 Safer Festive Season operation following information received from community members. Several identified addresses were searched by the Provincial Anti-Gang and Drug Task Team.

The operation was later extended to Ipelegeng, outside Schweizer-Reneke, where police searched identified premises linked to drug activity. During the raid, one suspect was arrested after being found in possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia, and cash suspected to be the proceeds of drug dealing. Police also confiscated quantities of drugs after suspects fled from one of the other targeted locations, leaving behind illicit substances. The arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 December 2025, on charges of possession of drugs.

Meanwhile, police operations were also extended to the other parts of the province. According to the police, the suspects, aged 38 and 49, were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, 23 December 2025, during separate operations conducted by Vryburg K9 and Crime Prevention Unit members.

TWO INITIATES DIE IN DR KK DISTRICT

KLERKSDORP – The North West province has recorded the deaths of two initiates during the current summer initiation season, prompting renewed calls for vigilance, cooperation, and parental responsibility as authorities intensify their crackdown on illegal initiation schools.
According to the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC), one of the deaths occurred at an illegal initiation school, while the other was reported at a legally registered school. Both incidents took place in Klerksdorp, within the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.
In response to the tragedies, the PICC has shut down seven illegal initiation schools across the province and rescued 68 initiates. Some of the rescued initiates have since been reunited with their families, while others were transferred to legally registered schools to safely complete their initiation process.
Law enforcement has effected six arrests linked to the operation. All suspects have been charged with contravening Section 33 of the Customary Initiation Act of 2021. Authorities have also confirmed that one principal operating an illegal initiation school in Mahikeng is currently on the run.
MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, has expressed concern over the loss of life and urged all stakeholders to work together to prevent further deaths. He emphasised the importance of parental involvement, calling on families to ensure that initiates are not sent to unregistered and unsafe initiation schools.
"As custodians of culture, we must protect life first," Molapisi said, adding that bogus initiation schools continue to pose a serious threat to young lives and the integrity of the custom itself.
The PICC has reaffirmed its commitment to intensified monitoring and inspections as the summer initiation season reaches its peak. Initiates are expected to return home from the first week of January 2026, with all initiation schools scheduled to close by 9 January 2026.
Authorities have once again warned communities that illegal initiation schools are not only unlawful but deadly, urging the public to report suspicious activities to prevent further loss of life.

MAN SHOT DEAD WHILE ATTEMPTING TO COLLECT CASH DURING CIT HEIST

MOGWASE – A man was shot and killed while allegedly attempting to collect loose cash during a violent cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on the R510 road between Rustenburg and Northam in the North West province.

The incident occurred at approximately 17h15 on Friday, 19 December 2025, near Dikweipi Village outside Mogwase.

According to information provided by North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, security personnel were travelling from Northam to Rustenburg in a cash-in-transit van when they encountered a burning vehicle blocking the road. Believing it to be a community protest, the guards attempted to take a detour through Dikweipi Village.

As they prepared to divert, a group of heavily armed suspects opened fire, injuring the driver of the armoured vehicle. During the attack, one of the suspects disarmed a security officer of his 9mm pistol and ammunition before the suspects used explosives to detonate the cash-in-transit van.

Police say the suspects, who were travelling in a Toyota GD6 and a Toyota Fortuner, began loading cash into their vehicles following the explosion. It was during this time that an unidentified man allegedly attempted to join the robbers in collecting money from the scene.

The man was allegedly shot dead by one of the suspects on the spot.

No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations into the cash-in-transit robbery and murder are continuing.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General Dr. Ryno Naidoo, has urged members of the public to stay away from crime scenes, warning that attempting to collect money during such incidents is extremely dangerous.

"Members of the public are cautioned against picking up money and tampering with or contaminating crime scenes, as this is life-threatening and jeopardises police investigations," said Naidoo.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are appealing to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

NATION MOURNS THE PASSING OF SENIOR TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP KGOSI BOGOSIENG MAHURA

NORTHERN CAPE - South Africa is mourning the passing of Senior Traditional Leader Kgosi Bogosieng Mahura of the Batlhaping ba ga Phuduhutswane in the Northern Cape, a revered traditional leader whose death has been described as a profound loss to the institution of traditional and Khoi-San leadership.

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, expressed deep sadness at the passing of Kgosi Mahura, describing him as a custodian of culture, indigenous knowledge, and history. Kgosi Mahura was the eldest member of the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders and was widely respected for his wisdom, institutional memory, and fearless leadership.

“It is sad that the institution of traditional and Khoi-San leadership loses one of its elders when we were still looking forward to drawing from his wealth of knowledge and wisdom,” said Minister Hlabisa. He noted that Kgosi Mahura was known for speaking truth to power and consistently advocating for community development and the interests of traditional leaders at both national and government levels.

The Minister further highlighted Kgosi Mahura’s pride in his Setswana heritage, noting that despite being fluent in English and Afrikaans, he preferred to express himself in Setswana, reinforcing his commitment to the promotion of indigenous languages. Hlabisa described his passing as “a burning library,” symbolising the loss of invaluable historical knowledge and lived experience.

Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul also conveyed his condolences, describing Kgosi Mahura as a leader who served his community with fairness, wisdom, and distinction. Kgosi Mahura led the Batlhaping ba ga Phuduhutswana ba ga Mahura Traditional Community and served in several leadership structures, including the John Taolo Gaetsewe Local House of Traditional Leaders, the Northern Cape Provincial House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, and the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, where he was the longest-serving member representing the Northern Cape.

Premier Saul praised Kgosi Mahura’s leadership style, rooted in Ubuntu, humility, and unwavering commitment to his people. He said Kgosi Mahura’s calm demeanour and firm advocacy for his community left an indelible mark on traditional leadership and governance.

“In mourning this great loss, we trust that his legacy in community building, cultural preservation, and stability will live on in perpetuity,” said the Premier, extending condolences to the Royal Family, the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders, and the broader Ba ga Mahura traditional community.

Adding its voice, the Bophuthatswana Civic Movement also paid tribute to Kgosi Mahura, describing his passing as the loss of a living archive of Batswana governance, memory, and law. The movement said Kgosi Mahura stood within an unbroken continuum of Batlhaping leadership that predates the modern political order.

In its statement, the movement reaffirmed its commitment to the ongoing struggle for the full recognition of Setswana language, Batswana identity, and traditional leadership within South Africa. It emphasised that calls for recognition are rooted in historical justice and constitutional dignity, not division.

“We honour our departed leaders not with silence, but with responsibility,” the statement read. “The continuation of this work is our generational obligation.”

Kgosi Bogosieng Mahura is remembered as a revered elder, a fearless advocate, a custodian of culture, and a servant of the people. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy remains firmly etched in the history of traditional leadership in South Africa.

KLERKSDORP – Four traffic officers have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a 37-year-old man on the N12 road in Klerksdorp, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through the province and raised serious questions about law enforcement conduct.

The North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, has welcomed the arrests of the four suspects, aged between 25 and 36, who were taken into custody by Klerksdorp police on Wednesday, 17 December 2025. The suspects are facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Osinakachukwu Macus Onu, a Nigerian national who was reportedly in the country legally, was fatally shot at approximately 03:00 on Wednesday morning during an alleged pursuit by the traffic officers, who were conducting operations at the time.

It is alleged that Onu was chased along the N12 before he was shot. His vehicle was later found abandoned in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the highway. Police were alerted to the shooting and responded promptly to the scene, where it emerged that the traffic officials involved had already fled.

Preliminary investigations by detectives led police to a location in Klerksdorp, where the suspects were traced. Their official fi****ms were seized and are expected to undergo forensic ballistic testing as part of the investigation.

The four suspects are expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 18 December 2025, where they will formally face charges relating to the killing and the alleged attempt to obstruct justice.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
