15-YEAR-OLD GIRL AMONG FOUR KILLED IN KANANA TAVERN SHOOTING

KANANA – A 15-year-old girl is among four people who were shot dead during a brazen attack at a tavern in Kanana, Orkney, on Saturday night.

According to North West police, three armed suspects wearing balaclavas and carrying rifles opened fire near a local tavern, leaving four people dead and two others injured.

The teenage girl sustained fatal gunshot wounds and collapsed near the entrance of the tavern. Police said patrons fled in different directions as gunfire erupted.

The three other victims, all men aged between 30 and 36, were identified as Lesotho nationals. Two women, aged 30 and 45, also sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation and no arrests have been made.

The North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Ryno Naidoo, condemned the attack and appealed to members of the public to assist police with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the community, with North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, visiting the affected families.

Morweng had earlier visited the family of slain social activist Daniel Makhabane Letsie, popularly known as "Mokoena", who was gunned down by unknown assailants last week. He later travelled to Kanana to offer support to the families of those killed in the tavern shooting.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Colonel Alex Lebodi of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit on 082 338 1076, their nearest police station, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

19 KILLED IN WEEKEND ROAD CARNAGE AS RTMC ISSUES SAFETY WARNING

SOUTH AFRICA - Nineteen people lost their lives in three separate road crashes across South Africa over the weekend, prompting the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when travelling at night and during the early hours of the morning.

The deadliest crash occurred in North West on Thursday night when a minibus taxi and a truck collided at the intersection of the R500 and R42 near Buffelshoek. The taxi, which was towing a trailer and carrying 13 passengers, reportedly collided with the truck shortly before midnight.

Six men, a woman and a young girl died at the scene, while another passenger later succumbed to injuries in hospital, bringing the death toll to nine. The crash is among the worst road accidents recorded in the province this year.

In Gauteng, five men were killed at around 03h00 on Sunday when a bakkie crashed into the back of a hatchback on Old Randfontein Road in Kagiso near Mogale City. All five occupants of the hatchback died at the scene, while the driver of the bakkie escaped without injuries.

Another five people lost their lives in Limpopo on Friday in a head-on collision involving a truck and a minibus on the N1 near Nyl Plaza. Preliminary reports indicate that the minibus crossed the median into the path of the oncoming truck, resulting in the fatal crash.

The RTMC said investigations are underway to determine the factors that contributed to the collisions.

Following the tragic weekend, the corporation appealed to motorists to improve the visibility of their vehicles and to take extra precautions when driving in winter conditions. Drivers have been warned about reduced visibility caused by fog, slippery road surfaces and poor lighting conditions, particularly during the night and early morning hours.

The RTMC further urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

Motorists have also been encouraged to check tyre tread, windscreen wipers and vehicle lights regularly, while using headlights appropriately to improve visibility and reduce the risk of collisions.

The corporation said responsible driving and proper vehicle maintenance remain critical in preventing further loss of life on South Africa's roads.

CALLS GROW FOR POLITICAL KILLINGS TASK TEAM AFTER ACTIVIST MOKOENA LETSIE MURDERED

POTCHEFSTROOM - Pressure is mounting for the urgent deployment of the Political Killings Task Team in the North West following the murder of activist Mokoena Letsie, barely a week after the killing of another prominent community activist, Thato Molosankwe.

The Bophuthatswana Civil Movement on Thursday said activists in the province were now living under fear as attacks on outspoken community figures continue to rise.

"Activists' heads are on the chopping board in North West," the organisation said in a strongly worded statement following Letsie's murder.

Letsie, also known as Daniel Letsie Makhabe, was shot dead on Wednesday evening at the Hashtag Informal Settlement in Sonderwater, Ikageng, near Potchefstroom.

North West police confirmed that Ikageng police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder after two men were shot during the incident.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said officers responded to reports of a shooting and found spent cartridges and live ammunition at the scene.

The victims had already been transported to hospital in a private vehicle before police arrived.

Morake said 40-year-old Letsie sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival at hospital, while another man who suffered a gunshot wound to the head remains in a serious condition.

No arrests have been made.

The Bophuthatswana Civil Movement alleged that Letsie was shot 17 times in what authorities suspect may have been a targeted political killing.

The organisation said the murder has intensified fears following the recent assassination of Mahikeng activist Thato "Senganga" Molosankwe, who was gunned down last week.

"Following the assassination of Thato Molosankwe, the Acting Provincial Police Commissioner promised swift action and arrests. To this day, however, the community continues to wait in hope," the movement said.

The organisation is now demanding that the Political Killings Task Team be deployed to the province with sufficient resources to investigate attacks against activists and community leaders.

Letsie was widely known for his activism and outspoken views on social justice issues. He was linked to the South African Council of Churches and founded the Potch4Palestine movement.

North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Wessels Morweng described the killing as shocking and condemned what he called a suspected hit.

"The killing of Mokoena follows on the heels of the similar killing of another social activist, Thato Molosankwe, who was killed by assailants last week," said Morweng.

"We are still mourning the loss of Thato who was killed last week and this week is Mokoena. Who are these people who have no regard for lives? Our police are out to look for the murderers and I am calling on communities who might have information to share it with police. We will hunt them down."

North West Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo also condemned the murder and urged members of the public to assist police investigations.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Detective Warrant Officer Tommy Sekhu of the Ikageng Detectives on 082 661 6528, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or submit anonymous tip-offs through the MySAPS App.

The Bophuthatswana Civil Movement further renewed calls for a referendum on the return of the death penalty for violent crimes such as murder, r**e and armed robbery.

The organisation conveyed condolences to both the Letsie and Molosankwe families, saying communities would only find closure once those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

PREMIER MOKGOSI TO VISIT FAMILY OF SLAIN ACTIVIST THATO MOLOSANKWE

North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi is expected to visit the family of slain Mahikeng activist Thato Molosankwe following his shocking murder last week.

Molosankwe was gunned down at his home in Lomanyaneng near Mahikeng in an incident that sparked outrage across the province and the country.

The Office of the Premier announced that Mokgosi will visit the Molosankwe family residence on Tuesday afternoon to convey condolences and support to the grieving family.

Mokgosi described Molosankwe as a fearless and outspoken community leader who dedicated his life to activism and community mobilisation, particularly around crime and service delivery challenges affecting communities in the North West.

"We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Mr Molosankwe. His contribution towards community activism and social justice will not be forgotten," Mokgosi said.

The Premier further extended condolences to Molosankwe’s family, friends and the broader community.

Molosankwe had become widely known for speaking openly against crime, corruption, drugs and social injustices. His activism earned him recognition across different parts of the province, with many residents viewing him as a strong voice for ordinary communities.
