NORTH WEST MOTHER DELIVERS TRIPLETS AT JOE MOROLONG MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

VRYBURG - The North West Department of Health has welcomed the safe delivery of triplets, the first set to be born at Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital in Vryburg.

The babies, two girls and one boy, were delivered on 12 August 2025 through a planned caesarean section by a team of doctors and nurses after weeks of close specialist monitoring. The mother had been referred from a local clinic as a high-risk patient because of hypertension and carrying triplets.

According to the Department, Baby 1 (female) was born at 09:02, weighing 2.16kg, Baby 2 (female) was born at 09:03, weighing 1.5kg, and Baby 3 (male) was born at 09:03, weighing 2.09kg.

While Baby 3 briefly required admission for respiratory distress and was discharged after three days, Baby 2 remains in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for weight gain. Babies 1 and 3 have since been discharged into the care of their maternal grandmother, while the mother remains in the Post-Natal Clinic as a lodger mother.

North West MEC for Health, Sello Lehari, who visited the hospital to meet the mother and healthcare workers, praised the team’s professionalism and commitment.

“The safe delivery of these triplets is a clear demonstration of the commitment and skill of our healthcare professionals. As the North West Department of Health, we place the health of mothers and babies at the centre of our work because we know that healthy families form the backbone of sustainable communities,” MEC Lehari said.

He further stressed that the achievement reflects the Department’s broader efforts to strengthen maternal and child health services in the province.

“Our contribution to reducing maternal and child mortality speaks directly to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages, especially in pregnant women and postpartum,” he added.

SAPS NORTH WEST LOSES DEDICATED SPOKESPERSON

POTCHEFSTROOM - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West, as well as members of the media fraternity, are mourning the passing of Captain Mpho Manyoba, who sadly died on Saturday, 16 August 2025, reportedly after a short and sudden illness.

Captain Manyoba was based at the North West police headquarters in Potchefstroom, where she served as a spokesperson. Captain Manyoba worked tirelessly to ensure that accurate information reached the public, often going beyond the call of duty to respond to queries and provide updates to journalists across the province.

Her professionalism, patience, and willingness to engage made her a trusted bridge between the SAPS and the media. Many journalists who worked with her fondly recall her dedication to transparency and her commitment to ensuring that communities remained informed about critical policing matters.

The passing of Captain Manyoba leaves a deep void in both the SAPS communication team and in the broader media community. Her contribution will be remembered with respect and appreciation.

We extend heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time.

May her soul rest in peace.

TWO ARRESTED FOR DEFRAUDING NORTH WEST PUBLIC WORKS OF OVER R87 000

TAUNG - The Hawks have arrested two men accused of defrauding the North West Department of Public Works and Roads of more than R87 000 in a project that was never implemented.

According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), the suspects — Malane Abraham Letsapa (45), an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) District Coordinator, and Moreotsile Israel Olifant (50), a former PR Councillor in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality — were arrested in Vryburg and Taung on Saturday, 16 August 2025.

The case relates to a project approved in December 2020, when the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality signed off on the Presidential Stimulus Project under the Department’s EPWP. The initiative, meant to benefit Matsheng and Tlapeng villages in the Greater Taung Municipality, involved cutting down trees and grass along the main road in and out of the two villages.

However, investigators allege that no services were rendered despite payments being processed. Olifant is alleged to have facilitated the selection of beneficiaries, while Letsapa processed claims for their payments over a three-month period. This resulted in the Department losing more than R87 000.

The pair made an urgent bail application at the High Court in Mahikeng on Sunday, 17 August 2025. They were granted bail of R2 000 each.

Letsapa and Olifant are expected to appear in the Taung Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 August 2025, on charges of fraud.

SANTACO DISMISSES REPORTS ON FORCED TAXI USE

Following media reports and circulating videos on social media platforms, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has strongly denied claims suggesting that it had instructed South Africans not to use their private vehicles and to travel only with their families.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 17 August, SANTACO said it had never made such an instruction and condemned the reports “in the strongest terms.” The council emphasised that it has never imposed any mode of transport on the public, and that no individual speaking such claims was representing the organisation.

“Any individual making such claims is not, and has never been, speaking on behalf of the Council,” SANTACO said.

The organisation reminded commuters that, like all other paid-for transport services, taxi use is voluntary and remains a choice for the public. It also urged members of the media to verify information directly with SANTACO before publishing, saying false reports damaged trust in the sector.

“For clarity, only law enforcement authorities hold the legal mandate to enforce regulations relating to transport in South Africa. We encourage members of the public to report any incidents of harassment or unlawful enforcement directly to law enforcement agencies,” the statement added.

SANTACO said it remains committed to serving the nation “with integrity and transparency.”

POLICE SEEK MAN LINKED TO KIMBERLEY R**E CASE

KIMBERLEY - Police in Kimberley are searching for a man believed to have information about a r**e that allegedly took place in the city’s CBD earlier this month.

According to the SAPS, a 25-year-old woman reported that she was at a tavern in the Kimberley CBD on 4 August when she asked an unknown man for a lift home. The man, who was driving a yellow two-door hatchback, allegedly drove her to a dark, secluded area near the state veterinary offices on Boshof Road.

There, he allegedly threatened her with a knife and r**ed her.

The woman told police she managed to jump out of the vehicle, but the man allegedly grabbed her through the car window and dragged her alongside the moving car before she broke free. She sustained injuries and later reported the incident to police.

The man is described as about 35 years old, light brown in complexion, 1.6 metres tall, of chubby build, and an Afrikaans speaker. He was reportedly wearing a jacket, a T-shirt and a dark-coloured cap at the time.

Police have released an identikit of the man and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist the investigation.

CRIME MARS NIGHT OF FUN IN IPELEGENG

IPELEGENG - It was a busy Saturday night in Ipelegeng, near Schweizer-Reneke, as amusement rides brought excitement to the township. Children and adults flocked to different entertainment spots, enjoying the festive atmosphere.

But when night fell, the mood turned grim as criminal activity took over. By Sunday morning, reports of robberies, assaults, and thefts were pouring in.

The Community Policing Forum (CPF) confiscated dangerous weapons in several areas, including Extension 5, Kathrada, and D600.

Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District CPF deputy chairperson, Itumeleng Mphuti, said several people were injured during fights and robberies, with some taken to local clinics for treatment.

One cellphone was recovered and returned to its rightful owner after being taken during a robbery.

Mphuti said the CPF remains committed to working with the community and the police to ensure the safety of residents during public events.

POLICE LAUNCH MASSIVE MANHUNT FOR ROODEPOORT COPS KILLER, R150K REWARD OFFERED

ROODEPOORT - The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a full-scale manhunt for Jabulani Thabang Moyo, the awaiting trial prisoner accused of fatally shooting two detectives in Roodepoort, Gauteng, on Friday, 8 August 2025.

National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, has deployed maximum resources, including crime intelligence, detectives, Gauteng tracking teams, and the Hawks, to track down Moyo, who is considered extremely dangerous and is allegedly in possession of the service firearm stolen from one of the slain officers. Police believe the same weapon was used in the killings.

“Moyo must be stopped in his tracks… he is a dangerous criminal and our operatives are on the ground looking for him to prevent him from committing any more heinous crimes. We will not rest until we find him,” Masemola said, urging members of the public not to harbour the suspect and to report any information to police.

SAPS has also announced a R150 000 cash reward for information that could lead to Moyo’s arrest.

The murders occurred just weeks before the SAPS Commemoration Day, an annual event honouring officers who died in the line of duty. Since the start of the current financial year in April, five police officers have been killed while serving.

On Saturday, 09 August 2025, police leadership visited the families of the two fallen detectives in Mogale City, Warrant Officer Sintwa of Mindalore, Krugersdorp, and Sergeant Masenya of Munsieville, to offer condolences and support. On Sunday, 10 August, senior SAPS officials, led by the MEC for Community Safety in Mpumalanga, Mr Jackie Macie, will visit the family of Sergeant Lawrence Dumisani Mtshweni, who was also killed in the line of duty, in Schoemansdal.

Authorities have warned the public not to approach Moyo but to immediately contact police with any information that could assist the investigation.
