New chapter in SA’s HIV fight starts today*

SA officially launched Lenacapavir at Lillian Ngoyi Stadium in Secunda, Mpumalanga - with President Cyril Ramaphosa in attendance.

Key points:
1. “Science meets hope”- Premier Mandla Ndlovu called the rollout a “celebration and a revolution”. He said it brings SA closer to an HIV-free generation, especially for Mpumalanga which has the highest HIV prevalence.
2. Major breakthrough- President Ramaphosa hailed Lenacapavir as one of the biggest scientific advances since ARVs. “The triumph of science over despair” with just 2 injections a year for 6 months of protection.
3. Scale of rollout - 360 public health facilities across 6 provinces + 24 high-burden districts are ready. Target: ∼1 million people by end 2027, 3 million over 3 years.
4. Mpumalanga leads - Premier Ndlovu said the province is ready with awareness campaigns, community outreach, and expanded services. “We are not just launching Lenacapavir; we are ready for it.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa touched down at Lilian Ngoyi Stadium in Secunda, Mpumalanga today for the official launch of Lenacapavir - SA’s new long-acting HIV prevention injection.

The event is another big step forward for public health in the country. It’s all about boosting HIV prevention efforts and making sure more South Africans can access new, easier prevention options.

Lenacapavir only needs two shots a year for up to 6 months protection, so it’s set to make prevention simpler for people at risk.
