INVESTIGATION CONTINUES AFTER A CASE OF CULPABLE HOMICIDE OPENED IN BREYTEN

Nelspruit: 12 November 2025 โ€“ Police in Breyten are continuing with investigations following a case of culpable homicide that occurred at Elim Farm in Breyten, near Ermelo, on Wednesday, 05 November 2025.

Police received a report about an accident that had taken place at the above-mentioned farm along the N11 road.

Upon arrival at the scene, members found two men standing nearby. One of them identified himself as Mr. James Mngomezulu, who, together with the other man, pointed out the body of an adult female lying on the ground in a pool of blood with no signs of life.

Mr. Mngomezulu, the husband of the deceased, informed the police that he had received a call from his farm dwellers notifying him that a tractor was busy ploughing his field. He and a family friend, Mr. Xaba, rushed to the farm to investigate.

Upon their arrival, his wife alighted from the vehicle and attempted to stop the tractor driver by waving her hands. Unfortunately, she was struck by the hoe blades (discs) at the back of the tractor, which then drove over her. She died on the scene.

The deceased was identified as Bishop Fetjie Virginia Mngomezulu (61).

It is further alleged that the tractor driver continued driving and only stopped approximately 900 metres away from the scene, even after the incident had occurred.

Emergency medical services certified the woman dead at the scene.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing. The case file has been submitted to the office of the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision and further directives. No arrests have been made at this stage.

HIGH COURT IMPOSES R650 MILLION FINE ON EMALAHLENI MUNICIPALITY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSGRESSIONS

In a groundbreaking ruling, the High Court of South Africa, Mpumalanga Division, has imposed a substantial fine of R650 million on Emalahleni Local Municipality, setting a powerful precedent for environmental accountability. The municipality pleaded guilty to multiple environmental offences under the National Environmental Management Act and the National Water Act, demonstrating a commitment to taking responsibility for its actions.

The municipality was found guilty of unlawfully disposing of waste, polluting water resources, and failing to comply with environmental authorisations and directives. Between March 2019 and March 2025, untreated sewage was permitted to overflow from municipal sewer systems into tributaries of the Olifants River, affecting areas such as the Witbank Dam, Naawpoort River, and Klein Olifants River. This unacceptable situation sparked numerous community complaints, prompting the Green Scorpions and Blue Scorpions to initiate investigations, ultimately leading to the municipalityโ€™s prosecution.

Represented by its Municipal Manager, Mr Sizwe Mayisela, the municipality entered a plea and sentence agreement with the State, demonstrating a willingness to make amends and work towards a more sustainable future. The court imposed a fine of R650 million or ten yearsโ€™ imprisonment, with R150 million or three years suspended for five years, on condition that the municipality does not commit further pollution-related offences. Furthermore, R500 million of the fine must be utilised for the rehabilitation and repair of wastewater infrastructure by 2031, ensuring that the municipality takes concrete steps towards environmental restoration.

State Advocate Beauty Cibangu emphasised the serious harm caused by the pollution, warning of its impact on ecosystems, public health, and local economies. This ruling serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and the need for collective action to protect our planet.

The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the ruling, stating that it demonstrates the Stateโ€™s commitment to holding offenders accountable for environmental crimes. This landmark decision sets a precedent for environmental justice, inspiring hope for a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

DRUG DEALING RACKET BUSTED IN WHITE RIVER

Nelspruit 13 November 2025- The Police have arrested two employees of a shop in White River yesterday, 12 November 2025, for dealing in drugs, following information received from a local school about children being found in possession of and smoking v**e pipes containing cannabis.

The incident came to light when learners at a White River school were found to be in possession of v**e pipes with cannabis, resulting in loss of focus during exams and strange behaviour. A meeting was held on Monday, 10 November 2025, to identify and operationalize the information, leading to the registration of a case by the White River K9 unit.

Undercover officers purchased cannabis from the shop, and a raid was conducted, resulting in the arrest of two employees. A large quantity of cannabis-infused products, including sweets, juice, v**e juice, dagga, pot plants, lollipops, chocolates, and cola, were seized, with an estimated value of R2,300,000

The shop, located at 21 William Street, White River, had only been open for a few days, having opened on 1 November 2025.

The operation was carried out by the White River K9 unit and Provincial Organised Crime Investigation detectives.

The suspects are expected to appear at the White river Margistrate's court today, Thursday, 13 November 2025.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi commends the school for reporting the incident and urges the community to continue to work together to create a safe and drug-free environment for our children.
